Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Larsen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
A big, life-changing risk I’ve taken is when I chose to leave my comfort zone and home in Nebraska. I’m a small town girl and with the way my art career was blossoming, I knew I’d outgrown the only thing I’d ever known. I’d explored plenty of art scenes all over the USA but there was only one that spoke to me in a way I felt different and that was Baltimore, Maryland. I’d setup a studio there for a year and was traveling back and forth before deciding on making the move. Since then, I’ve relocated permanently with my kids.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Sarah Larsen, a professional artist located in Baltimore, Maryland, originally from America’s heartland. Loss led me to art as a means to express my grief. The more I created, the more I wanted to. I started as a hobbiest which then turned into a professional career with my art debuting at a Denver gallery in April, 2021. Since then, my work has had the privilege of being included in gallery shows all over the US, art fairs, at Miami Art Basel winning Best Booth Design in 2022, and has been published nationally and internationally. I have also been honored to take part in brand collaborations.
What I’m most proud about with my art career is the opportunity to share love. I can’t think of any better way to share love than with art. Between each line (I’m a line-artist) is a piece of my heart forever imbued and ready to love you. This is truly such an honor to do so and I couldn’t be able to if not for you.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I credit the creation of my art career thanks to social media. I’m from a small rural community in central Nebraska. The only way I was able to be seen was because I began posting my art online.
Because I shared, I was seen by an art gallery in Denver that invited me to show my work. From there, I have connected with countless artists, galleries, art enthusiasts, and others that love art as much as I do. Plenty of opportunities have also continued to unfold because of social media, too. I could not have built my professional career or support network like I have without it.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
A few things have helped build my reputation within my market. First off, it’s been being true to myself/and transparent. I don’t have to forget who I am if I am myself everyday. Art is exceptionally vulnerable and I’m not afraid of sharing that journey with you whether it’s my process or my story. Also, learning about who my audience is has been an important stepping stone. Lastly, being consistent is critical as I have become a professional artist. That has meant being available and responsive, sharing my work, showing up to events and putting forth the effort 100% every time.
