Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Kornblum. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Before becoming a website designer and developer, I was a special education teacher. Because of this, I like to help the small businesses that I build websites for to think about who will using their website and how people will be using their websites. According to a 2021 study, less than 2% of websites in the United States are accessible. If 1 in 4 people (a quarter of the population) in the United States have a disability, your website should be inclusive so that you’re not losing business. Websites that are built with accessibility in mind also tend to offer a better user experience and have stronger SEO.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I help mission-driven individuals and small businesses grow their communities by designing and developing purposeful websites that build connections & foster community around a cause.
Building relationships is the reason I do what I do. In order to have a working relationship, we need to have a level of trust that is fostered through our work together. I listen to your concerns, dreams, and hopes for your business and translate that into a personalized solution for your website. My clients are my people and I will be the biggest cheerleader of your business.
As a former teacher, it is my job to educate you on the web design and development process and what that means for your business. Together we will create a website that will bring awareness to your cause and help to spread your mission throughout your community.
I use kind design practices to design and develop all of the websites that I create. Designing websites from a place of kindness means that your website will be created to be as accessible and as inclusive as possible which helps to foster positive user experiences with your website and with your business.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I began my working career as a middle school special education math teacher and loved what I did. In 2020 it was time for me to leave teaching. I was moving to another state and wanted a fresh start. This was also the same time as the COVID lockdowns were happening and businesses were needing to pivot online. I had built a website for a non-profit that I was part of a few years previous, so when the lockdowns were happening other people I knew who needed to get their businesses online reached out to me. And that’s what started my career as a web designer.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I really enjoy connecting with my audience on social media. It’s a great way to build brand awareness and connect with people outside of your usual circles. I was able to make this connection to my new audience by creating short-form video content that was entertaining and educational.
