We were lucky to catch up with Sarah King recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My biggest hero would have to be between 2 people. My dad, and my mother.
My father was a writer and started his career at 16, being published for magazines like True Detective and Hustler, and Playboy. He would write mystery or true crime articles for these magazines. Later, after having my sister and I, he wrote and published his first book. It was a huge hit. Since then he had published over 16 books.
I am very proud to say he was an amazing father and artist. It inspired me to follow my dreams to do Art for a living. My father passed away nearly 4 years ago to cancer. Every day I miss him, and thank him for being a huge inspiration for me.
My mother, was always very supportive of what I did, she worked 2 jobs and raised my sister and I. All the while making time to play, laugh, and love us. Even if she was tired. She also supported the family while my father pursued his career as a writer. She was his biggest cheerleader. She is also mine.
She’s my hero to this day and I’m lucky she is still in my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. My father was a true crime writer and fostered my early influence in the Arts. Having a bachelor’s degree in fine art with a focus in painting and drawing; I went on to receive my Masters degree in Education. I am proud to say I am a woman owned business. Owning and managing The King Art Studio, an art school where myself and staff teach from ages 5 to adults.
I have worked as an artist in mixed media and paint as well as resin, for most of my life, and had the fortunate ability show internationally and sell my artwork for a living as well.
My latest series is still being produced through 2023 has a very special place in my heart.
My artwork recently was shown in Milan Italy in October of 2022, as well as Barcelona in December 2022. Moreover, I showed in Miami in November 2022 at Miami Spectrum and Art Basel Miami, and New York in 2023.
The series is about a dreamlike memory of my youth. I want to transition my viewers to be able to “walk through” my paintings. With stark (dark) backgrounds against bright colors using 3D organic materials creating a unique and different look. Resin lays atop of the artwork for vitality of color, as well as an ethereal look from the organic materials that lie beneath. My goal is to empower other women and artists. My artwork, specifically my “Reborn” series you will find hidden reproductive organs growing from the flowers of the work. This is a representation of the source of life.
All organic materials are found, dried, and sculpted on canvas before I paint and pours resin as a finish. I love to work in layers, using mixed media and acrylic paint.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source would be social media, as well as going to Art shows. This allows artists to meet so many other artists and gallerists to gain more opportunities.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There have been many times my business has been slow, both with the art school and my own artwork. Covid happened, and shook everyone.
The hours and days I spent rebuilding and branding myself and my art as well as school took many long nights and days. Never giving up, finding ways to bring the Arts to the community, virtually, or side hustles.
Never giving up is what it takes to continue to grow. It is also humbling.
