We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Oftentimes my advice to the client is to be patient and keep it simple, as true progress takes time and effort. Get back to the basics of eating real, whole foods, get daily movement, sweat often, and hydrate with minerals. Those basics are foundational to health regardless of the diagnosis. We’ve gotten so far from the basics as a society focused on fast food, desk jobs, and a pill for every ill. Most of my clients have been through the medical system and feel totally overlooked and ignored. If I can get my clients to get back to the basics of health, they start to feel better without any medical intervention like medication which can come with unfortunate side effects of their own. If you’re at the beginning of your gut health / nutrition journey – then start with this – eat 3 meals a day that are focused on animal protein, fiber, and fat. This will nourish your gut, balance your blood sugar, and provide the energy you need to get through the day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I run a gut focused nutrition practice. I specialize in improving poor gut health and hormonal imbalances through functional testing and targeted nutritional support. With funtional testing I can understand the root cause of my client’s symptoms and health struggles. Many clients hope for a quick fix – one supplement or going on a gluten free diet to fix all their problems. While functional approaches take time and committment, they are beneficial for long term success and relief of symptoms. There’s no one magic pill to take but instead to look at the whole body and how your nourishing and fueling it. Most of my clients come to me with either IBS or PCOS diagnoses after their medical professional left them with no support other than a “bandaid” fix like a pill which doesn’t actually eliminate the issue. My focus is to get to the true reason behind their diagnosis and symptoms and eliminate it from there. I also like to focus on long term success in my programs. I think many people go through a program with a nutritionist or dietician and when it ends they end up right back where they started. It’s important for me in my programs to educate the client on how to continue working on their health for life! I offer group programs and 1 on 1 consulting to meet the clients where they are and what they need. I am extremely proud of my services and can’t wait to see what’s to come in 2023!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is having an active and personal Instagram account. I provide tangible advice and education on my Instagram where potential clients can learn and begin to trust me before they work with me. Instagram is the first step, but having a robust webstie with testimonials and credentials is key for legitimacy as well. A client is unlikely to sign without you having a website in my experience. You don’t need to build a website yourself if you’re not an expert in this area. I use Fiverr and find many experts in the area who are willing to help!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most beneficial attribute of a successful nutritionist growing their own practice is being genuine and empathetic with all. If you have an Instagram then show the good bad and the ugly. Show that you’re not perfect but can still maintain a healthy lifestyle while living your best life. Connect with followers and show empathy to what they’re going through. Don’t just use it to sell, but to connect on a human level behind a screen. Get on stories, create valuable content, and share.
