We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Jordan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Owning my business allows me to set my own schedule and make decisions that align with my vision and values. As a business owner, I find great satisfaction in watching my business grow and succeed. The journey of building something from the ground up is so rewarding! The challenges are many, but the joy of overcoming them and reaching milestones makes it all worthwhile. Especially as a mom, where my family comes first, I cannot imagine working for someone other than myself!

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was at the park one day with my daughter, and I was taking pictures of her blowing the dandelion weeds. I had always considered photography an interest of mine, but questioned if I had the ability to turn a hobby into a career. I had been an entrepreneur for the past 15 years while I was raising my kids. I ran a home business so that I could be with them while they were little. This business came with very long hours and I was growing weary of it. I consider that day at the park my turning point, and an answered prayer for the courage to make a much needed change. I decided to pursue this dream of photography, and as I took classes, learned about social media marketing, and practiced on friends and family, I slowly phased out my first business. In August of 2018 I booked my very first paying client! That was 6 years ago, and I still have some of those first clients return to me every year! I am so grateful to them who have been with me from the beginning!
My passion for this business is rooted in experiencing loss at a young age. When I was 26, I lost my first husband and father of my 3 year old son to cancer. Pictures were the only way to teach my son about the man who adored him so much, to tell his story, and keep his memory alive. I remember so many times thinking, why didn’t we take more pictures? That has stuck with me ever since. Carrying this mentality over into my business means that when I say it is an honor to capture your family’s memories, I really mean it!
Every type of session I offer holds a special place in my heart. Whether it’s the connection between new parents and their precious baby in a newborn session, or celebrating all the hard work and accomplishment of a graduate session. One of my favorite sessions are the ones with extended family! I love when grandma and grandpa come along, and I get to capture those little moments with their grandchildren! Or the special moments between parents and their adult children. I love creating beautiful, artful memories that become more invaluable with time!
If you choose me as your family photographer, just know that you chose someone who cares deeply about what I do. I have put a lot of heart into the fabric of my business. From the ease of booking, to the beautiful locations I’ve scouted in the East Bay Area. I offer styling help because I want you to feel beautiful during your session and deliver you a stunning final gallery. Im always so grateful to those who support small business and trust me with their memories.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a family photographer is capturing and preserving cherished moments for families. The joy and gratitude expressed by clients when they see their special moments beautifully immortalized in photographs are immensely fulfilling. These images often become treasured keepsakes, evoking emotions and memories for years to come.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, the primary goal driving my photography business is to create lasting memories for families by capturing their unique moments and relationships. I aim to provide high-quality, personalized photographs that families can cherish for generations. My mission is to tell each family’s story through my lens, highlighting their love, connection, and individuality in every image. I strive to be fair in my policies and pricing, to be reliable, and overall I want my business to be trustworthy.
The financial goals for my business is to achieve sustainable growth and profitability while delivering exceptional value to my clients.
