We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
For many years, I was a person who went from job to job. Not feeling satisfied or felt that I didn’t fit in at various companies that I’ve worked for. While working, I was also going to school full time and received two degrees. In 2022, my passion was introduced to me and I instantly fell in love with candle making. Starting out I had no clue about how to make candles, but I did a lot of research to perfect my craft. I love making all of my products and put so much time and love into each product. My mission is for many people to see the love I have for my craft as well as fill homes all over the world with more natural type of products. My products are blessed and it warms my heart when customers talk about them and notice my hard work.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born & raised in New Haven, CT. Mostly was very shy growing up and didn’t have that many friends. A few years after high school I started working in the mental health field, which I did for 9 years. Working in that field helped me to become talkative and broke me out of my shell because I had to be an advocate for individuals. Aside from working in the field and going to college, I still felt incomplete and didn’t know my purpose in life. In 2022, I had a conversation with my cousin, Johnnie Bunting Jr. and he introduced me to the candle making business. I did lengthy research and launched my business within two months. I knew that this was my purpose because I became so passionate about it and studied the craft every day after my work from home job was complete. I make soy candles, room sprays, body butter, massage oil candles, reed stick diffusers, and I will be adding more products in the future. My customers love that I make mostly natural products. This year I started making body butter and a customer left a review stating that she will always be my customer because since she has very sensitive skin, my body butter is perfect for her to use, and she has been continuing to purchase it. It makes me very proud that customers love the scents that I have chosen for my products and that they really love supporting me. I am always getting encouraging words when I vend at various pop-up shops and it makes me feel very good inside.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I feel that vending at so many pop-up shops, women’s brunches, fashion shows, and women’s conferences helped to build my reputation. It has allowed me to meet so many people from all over and gain sales. I love being able to connect with people and show them that I’m a pleasant and loyal business woman.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I was able to build my social media by being consistent with posting content. Consistency is definitely key because people have to see that you are staying relevant. Also gaining followers from in person sales and by meeting other local business owners at various events as well has helped.
