We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Humm. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
When I decided to go to cosmetology school, I remember feeling so sure that this was the career for me, but that didn’t mean it came without doubts. While my friends went to college, I began cosmetology school. Once I was working full time behind the chair, it was hard for me to relate to my friend’s lives at college. At first, choosing a career path so different from my peers was intimidating, but I am so glad I followed my gut. A few years later, I followed that instinct again when my co-workers and I decided to take a leap of faith and start our own business. There were plenty of obstacles when we began, but by trusting ourselves and one another, we have been able to learn so much. Opening our business has given me more confidence to trust myself in the future when taking risks, and shown me how fortunate I am to have so much support from the people in my life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I was in high school, I remember a distinct conversation I had with my old hairstylist. I was uncertain about my career path, and my stylist at the time knew I enjoyed doing makeup and styling hair for myself and my friends. She suggested I go tour cosmetology schools in the area, and it was an eye-opening experience for me. From then on, I was positive, this was the path for me. After a few years behind the chair, a couple of my co-workers and I decided to open our own salon. Co-owning and working with Breanna and Courtney has been such a fulfilling part of life. We value our client’s experience, from the safety of our products, to the relaxing environment within our space. Many clients have found us because we use of non-toxic color, which is safer for our clients and ourselves. Being able to connect with clients is what I love most about being in the salon. Whether I’m cutting, coloring or installing extensions, catching up with clients leaves me feeling lucky that I have chosen to be a hairstylist. I feel so grateful to be able to say I truly love what I do.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media and client referrals have been the most effective ways for us to grow our business. When people are searching for a new stylist or salon, we have found that having an online presence and portfolio have allowed potential clients to get an idea of us and our work before coming in to see us. We are also very fortunate to have a wonderful client base who refers family and friends to us.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Since we have so many clients who have allergies or sensitivities to hair color, an important goal of ours is to provide hair services that are safer and more available to all. It can be challenging for individuals who experience a reaction from hair color to find a hair salon with non-toxic color. We are excited to find solutions for clients with sensitivities, which has helped us build a reputation for a collaborative salon that values the quality of the products we use.
