We recently connected with Sarah Hilton and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My husband, Keith and his father, Don used to bond over the grill and making up their own rubs. The past few years Keith had been perfecting his rubs and sauces and I thought it was selfish for us to not share them with everyone. I have a background in marketing and Keith in sales so it seemed like a no-brainer.
When we were discussing what the name should be it seemed fitting to have it be a tribute to Don, naming our first rub after him and calling the business Big Head Barbeque. My in-laws all have big heads, which is where the name came from.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Before having kids and becoming a stay at home mom I worked in experiential marketing for nearly a decade. During that time and much more so after becoming a parent I became very interested in health and wellness, specifically what my family consumed. It was difficult to find spice blends and sauces that weren’t riddled with preservatives and additives so we started making our own. We saw this as an opportunity to provide the public with something rarely available, quality, affordable products without preservatives or additives.
We love showing people that good quality food doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
We produce all of our products out of our home kitchen and plan to expand to a commercial kitchen in the future. Over the past year we have tried partnering with a couple different co-packers however they wanted to alter our recipe or add fillers and preservatives. Having a clean product was not something we were willing to budge on. So we continue to package everything by hand, preserving the quality that we feel our customers deserve.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We have a reputation for being a pure product and have ensured that we stay that way. We are transparent with our ingredient labels, shying away from using “spices” unless the label space will not allow for all to be listed. We will not sell something just for a sale, our method is to uncover what type of food you already eat and pair you with a rub that will match that. Our products are available for sample when you find us in person.
