We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Grondin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I think about this every day. Being a business owner is alot of hard work and you never really have a day off. There is always something that needs to be ordered or fixed or researched. There is always a client that calls or texts with questions on the weekends. There is always education and trainings that need to happen on your off hours. I love my job and my clients but I don’t have the normal perks of a regular job like paid time off, health benefits or 401k. Is it worth it? That’s a hard yes for me. I thrive on being my own boss and thinking outside the box. I love being responsible for my own ideas and my own failures. There is simply nothing better than only relying on yourself.

Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been an esthetician for 21 years and can’t imagine doing anything else. I started out doing wedding makeup but really wanted a skill that I could do full time. Skincare really became my love in my late 20’s. I have fine tuned my business over the last 10 years and I am in my sweet spot now. I work as much as I can but also am finding space in my personal well being. It’s all about balance and I can’t do my job well if I don’t rest my body and mind. That being said, I constantly am trying to increase my knowledge so I can help my clients get their best and most healthy skin. I preach at home care but also encourage facials every 6-8 weeks. I recently purchased a state of the art facial machine that has the latest technology. It is amazing! It is used in LA, NY and all over Europe. I also carry 2 high end skincare lines that my clients can use at home when they can’t come in to see me for a tune up.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Bottom line is you have to give an outstanding service that sets you apart. My facials are all inclusive for one flat reasonable rate. Brow waxing, brow tint, face waxing if needed, peel, oxygen therapy, microcurrent, LED light etc… Clients love that they can get everything done in one appointment.
And clients talk. If they are happy or blown away with their service they are guaranteed to tell their friends. Word of mouth is the absolute best advertising. That is literally how I have gotten almost all of my clients.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
3 years ago I moved my business from a location I had been for 17 years. I had become complacent, bored and depressed. I needed a new challenge and a positive and happy workplace. I was scared but also excited. I remember crying that first month daily. Would I lose clients, would I like everyone in the office, and would this new place full fill my soul? Hands down it was the best decision I could have ever made. Sometimes being uncomfortable is the right choice.
