We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Grace De La Torre a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah Grace, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Corporate America often falls short, especially when it comes to supporting families. Children are often thought of as baggage or a burden. If I could make a change, it would be to shift the focus toward fostering a healthier work-life balance. The emphasis is too often placed on hours worked, rather than on actual productivity. After all, happy employees are more effective. Personally, I needed more time with my child. It felt like my job and the status of my team’s success were overtaking my life when, in reality, my family should have been my top priority. We need to invest more in building meaningful relationships and genuine human connections. We need to prioritize the well-being of pregnant women. Currently, maternity leave is barely adequate, and most companies don’t provide paid leave, which is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. I eventually left corporate America to spend more time with my family, be present for my children, and share those important life experiences. I started my own business to create a work-life balance that fits my values—one that allows me to be creative, involve my kids, and still generate an income.
Sarah Grace, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated with a degree in construction engineering and began my career in the construction industry, where I worked for six years before deciding to stay home with my children. After two years of financial sacrifice, I realized I wanted to start a business that could fit into my life without taking me away from my family. That’s when I founded Flossy. I’ve always had a passion for celebrating people and bringing them together, so I created Flossy, a mobile cotton candy and treat bar. I offer spun-to-order cotton candy for any occasion, combining nostalgia with an interactive treat that guests or friends can enjoy.
We’re always on the lookout for fresh trends or unique ideas for parties and events. While cotton candy has been a classic for a long time, what makes it truly special now are the new, fresh, and unique flavors we offer. Plus, it’s exciting that we can enjoy this beloved treat today without any artificial dyes or ingredients—just pure, organic goodness. I believe it’s this combination that sets me apart.
I’m incredibly proud of myself and my family for supporting this business idea. God has blessed me with a wonderful, supportive family. Even though it’s still new, the business has gained so much traction and support from my friends, family, and community. I want prospective clients to know that I am hardworking and always give my best effort on every project. I take great pride in everything I do because it reflects my name. As a mom, I’m also trying to provide for my family and show my children that they can be creative, think outside the box, and take risks with their careers one day too.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
If there’s one thing my children have taught me, it’s that life is messy. The sooner you accept that things won’t always go as planned, the easier it becomes. My new mantra is to go with the flow and roll with the punches. Control what you can, and the rest will work itself out. I followed the traditional path—going to school and climbing the corporate ladder—only to walk away from it all to become a stay-at-home mom. It required a major pivot, but I learned to navigate this new chapter of my life. Starting my own business has been challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve realized that things won’t always be perfect at first or go exactly how I want, but as long as I put my best foot forward, success will follow.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Building connections has been a game-changer for both my business and my growth on social media. Megan Mendez at DFW Networking Babes introduced me to Ashley Torgerson, the owner of Autumn and Aurora Events Co. Ashley was organizing a styled shoot with other vendors in my industry, and she took a chance on me by inviting me to be part of it. I was just starting out, and that single shoot led to 4 clients, which was a huge breakthrough for me.
