We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Fisher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
Well, when we got started, it was mid pandemic when all of the ports were shut down. So not only did our shipment sit at sea for three weeks we also realize when it finally got to us they sent us the wrong size because everything China does is in metric in America we use standard measurements. So we had to re-order all of our equipment, re-ship it, and have it sit back and sea again!
Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Like everyone who watches American ninja warrior, we loved the show! As a family, we would curl up and cheer on the athletes and one day our daughter Emily asked if she could try it. So we visited a nearby, NinjaWarrior gym, and she was a natural. We merely signed up and she’s been competing for the last five years. We saw NinjaWarrior was a growing sport in popularity and assumed someone would one day open the gym closer to us. Then we realized… That somebody was us! And summer of 2021, we jumped in with both feet and started the process of making NinjaFit. Hey Jim reality for west Cobb families like ours!! we have been open just under a year, and we are absolutely loving the community and love being a part of helping grow the sport
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Since the Ninja sport is relatively “new“ there are not a lot of places to purchase obstacles. And a lot of the equipment is made out of wood and if you do want to purchase it, it is extremely expensive. We had no idea that when we open this business, that we were going to become carpenters and learn how to build most of the obstacles ourselves. It has been a wild ride learning how to use a jigsaw, a chopsaw, a tablesaw, etc. but, Google has become our best friend and we have built about 70% of the obstacles in our gym
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Well, I would not call this a pivot, we are adding on parkour to our gym. When we first opened, we were only going to be in NinjaWarrior. However, we’ve learned that that is a niche sport and not everyone wants to be a ninja warrior and a lot of kids and adults love parkour. It is also growing in popularity and we have decided to start building and adding onto the gym a parkour city. He just gives us another group of classes which allows for another stream of income. .
