We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Esmi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents encouraged me to study something that would allow me to make a consistent, predictable living. In my 20s, I learned that living gig to gig was not for me, so I am glad that I invested in my law degree.

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
First, I am a poet and collage artist. I enjoy writing solo as well as in community with others in workshops and so on. As a creative consultant, I ideate with artists on their creative endeavors and help them develop their own sustainable artistic practices. I am a mother of two and attorney, as well as a trained facilitator.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Support artist parents, and parents in general, with free, qualified childcare.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Idle time is crucial for the development of creative ideas. So often, people will roll their eyes at the artist taking a nap, going for a walk, sitting and thinking, etc. But idle time is necessary for the free flow of ideas. And frequently, it is work for the artist to even carve out that time.
