We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Elliott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
There are many ways to make jewelry, so learning the craft is a personal choice. On my journey I have found I learned best through hands on classes with various instructors, as everyone has their own way of doing things. Then in practice, I experimented with those learned skills, and I figured out what works for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After my 14 year career as an interior designer, I started experimenting with making jewelry for fun. But what started as an hobby turned into a serious endeavor, and I established Sarah Elliott Jewelry in 2000. With my background in interior architecture, many of the design principles I utilized carried over into my jewelry as a form of art. These elements include form and function as well as the balance of shape, size and color. My jewelry has progressed throughout the years, as I’ve learned new techniques and methods. My jewelry consists of necklaces, bracelets and earrings made from natural gemstones, various metals, and glass beads. My methods include beaded jewelry, wire wrapping, metal smithing, stone setting and chain maille.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The creative process is the most rewarding aspect. With endless possibilities it’s very exciting to discover how ideas are transformed into an actual product.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My passion to create is what drives my creative journey.
