Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah E Magida. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah E, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I’m right on time…I’d like to think! I thought about introducing life coaching for artists for almost 20 years. I’m in my early 40’s and I came to a huge turning point in life where I realized I needed to get my razzz mattazzz back and really get serious about my life and arts practice. I had just been let go from a design job and was in the middle of buying a house with my then boyfriend who became my husband in 2 weeks time.
So we plan a wedding and get married in literally 2 weeks, after dating for seven years!
And I knew I just had to jump into coaching because it was extremely beneficial to my practice as an artist and helped to build confidence, trust in myself and others, helped to manage my trauma and even get more intimate in my arts practice. Seriously, coaching helped me across the board!
I am in the right place all at the right time, even with the ups and downs of my life.
Sarah E, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
LIFE COACHING — So in all honesty I don’t just work with artists. Artists I love you dearly, but I do take on other clients with vastly different goals. Like communication in the work place, creativity and innovation, wellness, guidance towards wellbeing. I even combine reiki with my coaching, more like energy work but a verbal emptying. One client even hired me to help him get through racist beliefs and perceptions!
I love to include amazing guided mediations often tailored to the needs of a specific client. And I even dabble in healing sessions, though I’m not 100% certain what those look like yet.
My next programing for artists opens in January 2024 with a challenge/workshop on Jan. 19th 2024. https://firefly-lifecoaching.com/art-is-life-1
It focuses on healing and clarity for next steps in your art career, but in all honesty anyone can take it!
ART — I work primarily as a fiber artist with my main practice being in embroidery art. I grow a dye garden in my front yard in a busy urban neighborhood of the city. I grow indigo, marigolds, black hopi sunflowers, hollyhock and other dye plants for the climate I’m in. I make quilted work with hand made batik fabric or hand dyed fabric. My practice is very connected to the natural world.
As of lately I have been completing some self portraits in embroidery and painting. Those are epic!
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
I’ve felt like throwing in the towel so many times. People say, nothing tests you like a small business!
Well its true.
Entrepreneurship is a beast.
But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’ve found out how strong I am. How on top of all these moving parts I can be. How present I am in my own life and even willing to be ambitious, persistent and consistent.
I’ve arranged my life very purposefully so that I can exist within the arts community and show support as well as guidance. It’s just me right now so anytime I miss payroll I’m the one effected the most. Which also drives me to really get shit done, but I give myself the grace to run a business to. Sometimes I work like a wild woman for 3 weeks straight ( with weekends off!) and then take a week off. I know how to balance my energy and keep myself tuned in. I have a HUGE self care practice and knowing how to care for myself and be my own advocate has been tremendously important.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Here is a brief book list: – The Prosperous Coach – a great book to gain knowledge in pricing for artists and coaches
– Make Your Art No Matter What- a great book for learning boundaries surrounding your arts practice that help you stay healthy minded in your art career
– The Surrender Experiment — a bit preachy, but overall magical
– BIG MAGIC- if you get it, it will resonate deeply, if not no worries
