We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Duke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
In college, I went down an internet research rabbit hole about toxic ingredients in our food and personal care products. It was extremely alarming so I began buying organic (when I could with my college student budget), reading ingredient labels and eventually creating my own body care products. It all started with a body scrub. After several years, I had friends and family asking to purchase my products for holiday gifts which was a huge compliment. After I lost my corporate job in 2019 and then the pandemic in 2020, I decided to take a leap of faith and launch SIBS. It has been a whirlwind of emotions, ups and downs and hard work but I am so happy to have the opportunity to do what I love and to offer clean, handmade body care products that are super effective and affordable.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
SIBS is a clean & handmade body care brand. I am still the sole business owner and formulate and create all of the products that are sold. The main problem I find in the body care industry is that large companies will market their products as ‘clean’ when in fact, they contain very harsh chemicals that not only dehydrate the skin, but can also disrupt the endocrine system and cause allergic reactions. I have made it a priority to be true to my passion and only use clean, effective ingredients. We aim to be transparent and inform consumers about what is in the products they purchase. If I can educate 1 person a month and inspire them to learn more about what they are putting on their skin daily, I am doing my job – gaining a new customer is a plus.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell my products on SIBScreations.com or in person at events. I also have SIBS products for sale at local swimwear shops, pottery studios and wellness boutiques which have created mutually beneficial partnerships with like minded creatives and entrepreneurs. I am so grateful for these extremely talented South Floridian business women.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
This is something I need to improve on, actually. My background is in marketing and I know the importance of gathering customer information and speaking to these clients regularly via email, social media, etc. I love meeting new customers at artisan markets and through online sales and plan to focus more on this in the upcoming year. I’ve also learned that it is important to include a personalized thank you note with every online order to express my gratitude for supporting my small business.
