Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Dalton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Certainly! As a floral designer with a focus on using locally grown flowers, sustainable practices, and high-end design, I take pride in how my brand deviates from the industry standard. One of the key differences is my commitment to sourcing flowers and materials locally, which not only supports our local economy and reduces environmental impact but also enables me to achieve beautiful, seasonal, garden-style designs. They also seem to add a layer of authenticity and ‘alive’-ness that using imported flowers alone wouldn’t be able to achieve.
By working with local, farm-grown blooms, I have easy access to a diverse range of fresh flowers and foliage that are well-suited for creating lush, natural-looking arrangements. Garden-style design emphasizes the use of a variety of textures, colors, and shapes, mimicking the beauty of a blooming garden. Using local flowers allows me to achieve my desired design goal of lush, romantic displays full of cascading vines, delicate wildflowers, and intricately petaled focal flowers. This aesthetic is easily achievable with locally-sourced and organic blooms, as they are often more varied and unique, have funkier shapes and colors, and are healthier compared to imported flowers.
Garden-style design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also aligned with my values of supporting local growers and practicing sustainable floral design. It’s a testament to how diverging from the industry standard and embracing local resources can lead to truly exceptional and meaningful outcomes in floral artistry, not to mention strengthening the local community and economy.
Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely! My name is Sarah Dalton, and I am the owner of Flowerkisser. I’m a floral designer specializing in custom vase arrangements and bouquets, event and wedding services, and I have a passion for leading floral design workshops. My journey into this industry started with a deep passion for nature and art. My first job in the floral industry was on an organic flower farm in Kentucky, and I’ve been drawn to the beauty and vitality of locally grown flowers ever since. My design style leans very heavily into the dutch masters lush, garden style, and I draw intense inspiration from observing the way blooms and foliages grow out in the wild.
What sets me apart is my dedication to creating personalized and meaningful experiences for my clients, and fostering deep and meaningful relationships with local farmers. In the wedding and event realm, I work closely with couples to translate their vision into stunning floral arrangements that reflect their style and story, with a focus on true sustainability. From intimate elopements to lavish celebrations, I create lush, intricate designs using seasonal blooms that really convey the time and space they were grown in.
I am also proud to offer floral design workshops where I love to share my knowledge and techniques with enthusiasts looking to explore their creativity! These workshops are not just about learning new skills but also about fostering a love and connection to nature and sustainable floristry practices. Potential clients and followers should know that my brand is rooted in authenticity, creativity, and sustainability. I pride myself on my meticulous attention to detail, and passion for high end design. I love to use my craft to spread joy, celebrate beauty, and inspire others to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of the natural world.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Absolutely! One resource has been utilizing local flower farms and sustainable suppliers. Early on, I relied heavily on traditional wholesalers for my flowers, not realizing the wealth of unique, seasonal blooms and foliage that local growers offer.
Discovering these local farmers and suppliers has not only expanded my design possibilities but has also allowed me to align more closely with my values of supporting the local economy and reducing environmental impact. Using local producers has become an integral part of my design process and have elevated the quality and authenticity of my floral arrangements. I do wish we had a local marketplace where all of the farmers could be found in one place similar to a traditional wholesaler, but we’re working on it! Stay tuned! ;)
Additionally, I’ve found immense value in connecting with other designers through workshops, freelancing gigs and honestly, through instagram! These interactions have provided valuable insights, inspiration, and support throughout my creative journey. Building these connections has enriched my learning experience and encouraged collaboration and innovation within the local floral community.
I believe that being aware of your local resources and fostering a supportive network of peers are invaluable assets that can greatly enhance a creative journey in floral design and beyond.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely! The driving force behind my creative journey in floral design is centered around sustainability, beauty, and meaningful experiences.
One of my primary goals is to promote and utilize sustainable practices within the floral industry, and to celebrate the beauty of the natural world at the same time. I aim to serve as a source of inspiration to anyone who is around my work, and to have the most positive environmental impact I can while still create striking, lush designs. I believe that floral arrangements have the power to evoke emotions, tell stories, and enhance experiences. My mission is to use my creativity and vision to create designs that not only look visually stunning but also resonate with meaning and purpose for my clients.
I am also passionate about education and sharing knowledge with others. Through floral design workshops I aim to empower aspiring florists and enthusiasts with the skills and inspiration they need to explore their creativity and contribute positively to the floral community and environment.
My creative journey is driven by the goal of creating beauty sustainably and meaningfully, while also nurturing a sense of community and learning within the floral design industry.
