We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Curtis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah , thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I want people to remember me and my salon for being a place where everyone was welcome. I try to make the environment one of peace and comfort. I want people to know that this is not just a place to help make you feel beautiful on the outside, but to be a place where you can come to feel the sweet spirit of God’s love. This isn’t just a job to me, it is a ministry I was gifted.

Sarah , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a wife of almost 30 years, mother of 3, and grandmother of 5. I was a stay at home mom for about 10 years. My husband and I always wanted me to be home with my children until they were all in school. Once my last child started school I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. I had, in the past, talked about going to beauty school, but thought I was too old to start in my 30’s. It was with my husband’s nudge and support I took a leap of faith to go back to school. It took 13 months to graduate and several small internships before finally landing a job and a very nice day spa. I stayed at that job for about 8yrs until it went out of business and the building was being sold. Then it was time to take another leap of faith and go out on my own. That is when I started Beauty For Ashes Salon. The name comes from a Bible verse, Isaiah 61:3, because I want this to be a place for everyone to feel the beauty God has given them on the inside and out! We are a full service salon offering several different hair, nail, and waxing services. We are a small company with two technicians available to assist you with all your beauty needs. We love giving our guests a personal touch that comes with having that intimate space.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I was fortunate that the spa I worked at was closing and I was able to buy a lot of the things I needed from them. I did have to take out a loan to do construction to the building I rented to get it up to code. It was tough at first trying to pay rent, utilities, buy supplies, and pay on a loan, but God got me through!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Advertising is great, but I have to say my best source has been word of mouth. When you go above and beyond and perform great services people talk. I have heard from so many people that my salon is the best at so many particular services because we take time to make sure it’s done to the very best of our ability. We do not try to rush people in and out to just “get in more clients”. We make people feel wanted and appreciated. I give my clients services the way I would want them done to me.
