We recently connected with Sarah Clayborn and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
Back when I was in high school, I’ve always wondered why it wasn’t required to teach students about different careers they could have. It was always y=mx+b, but never lessons on how to grow your business rapidly. I understand not everyone wants to be part of the typical job list like a business owner, lawyer, doctor, etc. There are other ways students can learn to make money that schools fail to teach; for instance, the stock market, Amazon FBA, yoga instructors, artists, social media influencers, food styling, and so on. With that being said, students deserve to sit down in the auditorium and listen to a motivational speaker remind them that anything they yearn to become is indeed possible. Every school needs a motivational speaker. I believe students will benefit a ton from it and do them justice.
Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Sarah and I’m 19 years old. I want to start off by saying, I never would have thought that I’d be an artist. I wanted to be a teacher, news anchorwoman, model, business owner, and eventually a creative director for marketing. Not once did an artist cross my mind until I picked up a paintbrush and played with some colors. I was loving it. Painting people on wood boxes with acrylic and selling them was my hobby. Then I wanted to test my ability to paint on a canvas and I never went back.
My ability to paint people has grown expeditiously and found myself actually enjoying it. Why not make money off of what I love right? That’s when I took my painting business seriously between the months of June and July 2021. I’ve posted content on my social media and gone viral a couple of times getting lots of recognition. Even recognition from art galleries and some celebrities I’ve painted.
My mission is to help clients fill in wall space in their home, studio, or business and bring their vision to life by having them explain in detail what they want from size, photos, colors, and finishing touches to me and I’ll get it started. I adore receiving and taking in reactions from my clients when they see their painting all finished. It’s a reminder that people can get positively and emotionally connected to their vision on a canvas and that’s what keeps me motivated.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
College. I wanted to be in the marketing industry, so I took some online courses in college to get my certificate because I didn’t have the funds to get a degree. After completing my digital marketing courses, I discovered that I didn’t want to be in that industry anymore. It saved me so much money. After the program was over, I was finally happy to take my freedom back and start doing what I do best. Creating. After a couple of months, I perceived college differently. I felt that college wasn’t necessary to be successful. There are quite a lot of well-known people who dropped out, never used their degree, or never attended college and became more than what they thought they’d be.
That lesson brought me peace of mind because some people feel less-than just because they don’t have a degree or college experience but it is definitely not true and I don’t view anyone, including myself that way.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Consistency! I’m learning that consistency takes practice and self-discipline. Quality content and consistency will take you far. Pay attention to what people like when you post and do more of that. It leads to more shares, likes, and comments. That equals more potential clients!
