We recently connected with Sarah Chambers and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah , appreciate you joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
Our greatest gift as a salon is making the clients leave feeling the most spectacular. Goddess In You Salon is an inviting space that brings together cultures, diversity, and inclusion. Every day we get to make our clients feel like the God or Goddess that lives inside them come into the light. When a client comes in to get their hair done before the school year starts, when a bride comes in to get their wedding day look, when a regular comes in and gets a haircut, we give the opportunity to make them feel their very best. We do this every day, with every customer. We had a group of summer youth working with us over the summer and they all had a color service done to their hair, one youth wanted hot pink, one youth received mermaid blues and the change in their attitude after was like night and day.
Sarah , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started this business in February of 2020, one month before the pandemic took shape in New York City. As a salon, this was the most challenging as we weren’t allowed to touch people or breathe near them, it was a massive challenge as a new business owner. I am most proud of the survival of this business and that we are thriving now, 3 years later.
We are a full service salon specializing in color, natural hairstyling, hair growth, braids, luxury extensions, weaves, and wigs. We have an incredible team of stylists that bring vibrancy and creative professionalism to each service, We have clients that experience hair loss, alopecia, and many more hair concerns that come in to overcome and create healthy hair into the future.
We want people to come into the salon and feel their very best, to try new things, to ask questions and feel comfortable in the space so they return again and again.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
We maintain our morale by creating an open, warm, and communicative environment where our voices are heard and listened to. The team manages their own clientele and bookings, however we have our salon coordinator that follows up to make sure our clients are taken care of. The more open the communication, the easier it is to overcome obstacles as a team. We enjoy being with each other and always have each other’s back, that in itself creates a high morale.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started this business with my own savings, this was a business that was built from my own two hands with the savings I have earned. I didn’t get money from loans or investments, just years of building a savings to make my dreams come true.
