Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Caum. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I’m still in the midst of creating my legacy. I often feel as if I haven’t even begun, so I’ll look to the parts of my character I’m proud of. I hope that I leave behind as I’ve carried with me the inspiration to heal. I hope people can learn to alchemize their pain into something beautiful, something meaningful. I hope that I’ve stirred motivation in others to face adversity head on and grow from it. And I hope people learn to love and love deeply with great fervor.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I create custom home & restaurant decor and metal sculptures using pieces I’ve found on field trips to scrap yards. I’ve had an affinity for art and creating since I was a child. I’ve worked with my hands creating, repairing, & restoring my entire working life. I became a welder in my 20s, and quickly found a love for creating metal art pieces. In late 2021, I was let go from a job and instead of applying for other jobs, I threw myself into creating art and taking on commissions. I let go of the idea of traditional employment and dove head first into self employment. It’s been a struggle and a learning experience, but the personal growth I’ve experienced has prepared me for the successes to come.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think some may chalk my entire story up to resilience. I’ve had a number of setbacks in my life; some self sabotage and some just circumstances of life. Last year, I suddenly and unexpectedly lost a pretty good paying job. I could have let that immobilize me. I could have let it send me into a downward spiral. Instead, I poured myself into my own work and my art. I started making a name for myself in my community. Now, I don’t have to find work anymore; work finds me.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media helps tremendously, but I find just talking to people has gotten me more work. I often strike up conversations with people around me and the flow often goes to what I do for a living and suddenly I’m booked. It’s a good problem to have.
