We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Cash. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I still remember the first time I picked up a paint brush and painted a wood bead. At the time, I had no idea hand painted wood bead jewelry would be what I would build my entire business, Sarahfide Creations, around. I started creating jewelry while recovering from multiple surgeries. I was creating jewelry more as a hobby and to occupy my time, while I recovered. I had no real interest in making it a business but I fell in love with it. When I announced I was starting the business, Sarahfide Creations, my family, friends, and community rallied around me. A few weeks before launching my website sarahfide.com , I received a call from a friend asking me to create a pair of custom earrings. She needed a specific color. Having worked in customer service for twenty five year, I told her yes, even though I wasn’t sure how I would do it. The earring design itself wasn’t difficult but the challenge was that she wanted the earrings to be a specific color. I tore my bead supplies apart looking for the color she needed but found nothing. I couldn’t buy the beads because I had been out of work and finances were tight, so I decided to paint a wood bead the color she needed. After painting the first bead, I decided to paint more and started creating jewelry with my hand painted beads. My friend loved it. Actually, everyone loved it. When I launched my website, my hand painted wood bead jewelry sold before all of my other pieces. Not only was it rewarding to see people loving my creations but I really loved painting the beads. This is when I realized, I found it. This is what I want to do, for the rest of my life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Although I’m a happy person, I have had my share of tragedies. It’s strange how one minute your life is on one trajectory and in a matter of seconds, you find your life is on a path completely unexpected and unplanned. This is what happened to me.
Life was good. I was happily married to my husband of twenty years and had three beautiful daughters. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I needed a medically necessary surgery; an ovary removal. During this relatively common surgery, an accident happened. The surgeon removed my ureter instead of my ovary. It was the moment the trajectory of my life changed forever. It almost killed me and I almost gave up on life. While trying to pick the happy pieces of my life back up, I tried to go back to work but my health wouldn’t allow it. I was in and out of the hospital, having surgeries, and I was constantly getting infections. My husband and I decided I needed to stay home and recuperate, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, all of it. My mind and body needed rest.
During this hiatus, I started playing with jewelry. It started as a hobby but after some encouragement from family and friends, I decided to start a business. After launching my website and releasing my first jewelry collection, I was hooked. I loved it!!! Not only did I love it, but everyone loved it.
Early in the process, due to limited resources, I started painting wood beads to add pops of color to my jewelry creations. When I opened for business, the creations with my hand painted beads sold first. It was then that I realized I had uncovered a hidden skill but also had discovered a gap in the jewelry market. A gap I could fill. Because, not only is my jewelry beautiful, handmade, affordable but it is lightweight. Many women would love to wear statement pieces but can’t due to how heavy it is. The beauty of Sarahfide is that I create jewelry using wood, which is light. This makes my jewelry easy to wear. I also use the highest quality metals so my jewelry can be worn by women with sensitive ears.
I love sitting down in my studio, visualizing what I want to create, and making it happen. From conception and design, to painting the beads, then making beautiful jewelry, I do it all and I do it like no other.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I thought creating jewelry would be the most rewarding aspect of owning Sarahfide Creations but, really the most rewarding part has been creating relationships with the women who shop Sarahfide. I meet new women daily. I get to hear their stories and be a part of their minor and major life moments. When the world sees a beautiful woman wearing a beautiful pair of earrings, I see a young mom who is rejoining the workforce after staying home to have babies. A young woman nervous about a new job but feeling confident because she looks fresh and trendy wearing her Sarahfide jewelry. I could write story after story about the women who shop Sarahfide. Women who like to work hard, play hard, and love with their whole hearts. Women who are world changers and life savers. I love designing and creating jewelry but getting to meet so many inspiring women has been the most rewarding aspect of owning Sarahfide Creations.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The number one thing women want to know is how I do it all. They want to know how I’m a wife, mother, involved community member, struggle with poor health due to a bad kidney, and run my own business; constantly creating and releasing new jewelry. Short answer, I’m resilient. By resilient, I mean, I work hard all the time. In the past, I’ve been hurt by people who didn’t show up and I’ve been helped by people who did. In life, in my business, in my relationships, I want to be the person who shows up, every day, rain or shine, good days and bad. As a business owner, I remember my most challenging days were at the height of covid. The world was still moving forward but it was being run from home offices and from computers on dining room tables. It was no different in my own home. My husband was in one room working, my three children were in the next room doing school remotely, and I was hustling in my studio. Those days were hard and they pushed us to our limits. They pushed everyone to their limits. I think as a civilization, we all learned how resilient we are. When deadlines are due and stresses are high, I reflect on what I learned during those times. I remind myself how resilient I am and I push through.
