We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Camp . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I ventured into the spray tanning business just a few months prior to a global pandemic.
I enrolled in courses and took private lessons to learn everything I could about the trade of airbrush spray tanning. When the pandemic shut down my business, with the extra time I had, I worked daily to improve my skills. I tried new techniques and introduced new tools in my trade. I researched, talked to professionals, and asked hundreds if not, thousands of questions. Each day I tried to learn something new and solve problems that commonly arise in the spray tan world. I wanted to be the best I could be and overcome glitches and imperfections that commonly come with a spray tan. The biggest challenge for me was finding people to practice with! I used my kids as models and their friends as well. I incorporated using make up brushes and my own special techniques with a lot of trial and error until I found what worked. When I was finally able to open up again and run my business, I went mobile with everything I had learned. I spray tanned anyone and everyone who would let me – – trying new techniques, applications, tools, solutions and colors to apply to every skin tone.
I think everyone was frustrated during the pandemic, but I knew in order to succeed I had to adapt. So I did just that. I kept striving to be better and produce what I felt was the perfect custom tan unlike any other I had ever seen. So what presented as a huge challenge also became a blessing because I was able to perfect my craft and become the best version of myself in the spray tan world. I look back now and realize I achieved what I was working toward even though I didn’t really realize it at the time. I had the gift of extra time during the pandemic, which allowed me to practice, focus and put what I learned into action.
I’m a former teacher and I consider myself a lifelong learner. I started this business quite late in life when I was already 50 years old. Sometimes I think it would’ve been easier starting sooner, but that’s not my story and I think the challenge of starting something hard and new at this phase in my life created an opportunity for success and made me even better.
I’m proud to have developed the perfect, safe, sun-kissed glow that makes people feel confident inside and out!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started Safe Sun By Sarah because I knew I could offer a better experience and finished product than anything else readily available.
In my observation, the world of spray tanning was lacking meticulous attention to detail which is crucial for a beautiful outcome. I am extremely detail oriented. It’s just in my blood and it’s who I am. I took my meticulous nature, learned the skills to be an outstanding artist and paired that with teaching so that I equip my clients with everything they need to know for a lasting gorgeous glow. Because another means to achieving an exceptional tan is providing clients with proper education about prep, maintenance and care, I provide them all with a one-on-one education which is another secret to my perfect tans.
You’re only as good as your product, so I researched to find the best of the best in the solution lines for my clients. I can give a mean sweat resistant tan that will withstand any work out and even a vacation at the beach or the pool!
Another step in my pursuit of the perfect airbrush tan is taking undertones, hair and eye color and skin tone into account when mixing just the right solution for each client. I pride myself in consulting with and getting to know each client so I can uniquely tailor a tan to perfectly meet their needs and desire.
During a detailed in-person consulting process, I identify the best hand-mixed solution to use to achieve the absolute best end goal. It matters whether this tan is for a trip to the beach, a photoshoot under lights and makeup or for just the pleasure of a beautiful daily glow with no special occasion. For example, I have a client who frequently has sessions with me prior to photoshoots for magazine covers and printed materials. Those tanning sessions are very different than the sessions I have with her just prior to her family vacation to Disney where I knew she will spend time at the pool. I take all of these details into account to determine just exactly what my clients need based on the events they are attending and the end goals they have.
The products I work with and offer are unmatched, and when paired with my techniques, professional experience and knowledge, the outcome can’t help but be the best of the best.
Once clients step into my studio, they tell me they are comfortable and assured they have made a good decision to trust me. It’s not easy to feel confident when you have little to no clothes on! I offer a sense of calm, and my clients tell me repeatedly how they feel relaxed and how happy they are while showing off a stellar tan that was custom mixed and meticulously applied just for them.
It’s my desire to understand and connect with my clients. I try to step into their shoes and hear what they want and what they’re looking for. I think what it comes down to is that what I provide not only results in a beautiful tan, but it allows a tired mom or a person busy with a career to stop for a moment and participate in some needed self care. It’s amazing what 30 minutes, some meticulous attention to detail and a drizzle of some beautiful summer color can do for self-esteem.
A beautiful application of color can change everything, but a few moments of self-care can transform an attitude and skyrocket self-esteem.
I offer everything I can in my arsenal of knowledge, color, and perfected techniques, but sometimes my clients also need to be heard and understood. I try to roll that all into one beautiful package. I’m honored because my clients overwhelmingly tell me my custom tans are the best they’ve ever had and often realize how much they have needed to take time to practice a little self-care.
Although I didn’t realize how much of a connection I’d be making and confidence building I would be achieving with my clients, I think that little bonus in my business is something I feel most proud of. There is a need and I am filling it. My clients become my friends, young and old. They come to me for the best possible custom spray tan in Texas, and they leave as a friend and not just a client, with a drizzle of gorgeous color and confidence that’s only achieved in my little private studio.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m still building my social media presence, it’s always a work in progress, but I can offer a little advice into what works for me that might work for others.
Number one, I have learned to connect with my audience. I try to tell a personal experience and share a personal photo. Those are the posts that get the most engagement. Those are the ways that connect me to not only existing clients but new ones. I try to always make things personal. I try to speak of my vulnerability or share a little about myself and what my business is doing. People like to hear real, true stories. They like to have someone to relate to. There have been a few people in recent years that have been instrumental in teaching me how to make an impactful post. I’m grateful to them and I have tried to share their bits of wisdom with others so other business creatives can struggle less and be more empowered for success. Authenticity is key, and I’m really proud to be genuine and share that with my followers.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I overcame 24 years of an abusive relationship by facing my fears and with encouragement and help of family and friends.
From it, I learned that I can overcome and accomplish difficult things as a strong woman with a powerful support group behind me. I learned to stand up to my fears and face difficult tasks that before had left me feeling powerless and defeated.
I also learned the experiences and relationships don’t define me, but they do define the way I react to them.
Starting my own business was a frightening step that was a product of trying new things and overcoming fears.
Life is not always going to hand you an easy path, but standing strong and facing fear will empower and encourage you to overcome and not give up even when the road seems like a long and upward battle. We cannot let adversity define us. Beauty starts on the inside out, and I’m so proud to play part in that journey with all of my clients.
