We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Britton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Growing up, I’ve always loved Kpop music and pop culture. I was first exposed to the genre at the age of 12, the song was So Hot by The Wonder Girls, and the production, styling, and overall aesthetic were something I’d never seen before. It quickly grabbed my attention.
My favorite side of the industry was always the production, style, and the media. So for my company which is a kpop media outlet, I wanted to come up with a name that incorporated those elements, and thus Tokkistar was born. Tokki: is the Korean word for bunny, and Star: is another word for Idol.
Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My story began in 2015 when I posted on a kpop Facebook group asking if like-minded people wanted to start a YouTube channel with me. This is where I met a great group of women to begin this journey with. However, that venture fell through pretty quickly. And even though it didn’t work out, I still wanted to find a way to bring kpop to Houston. This was when I started a new channel called TokkiStar, a media outlet made by the fans for the fans. We’re dedicated to bringing our viewers/readers all the latest, news and hot topics on their favorite Korean celebrities.
And throughout the years, my company has achieved a lot. The success of my YouTube spawned the website Tokkistar.com which gave me a chance to dive into the world of journalism and be able to attend kpop concerts as press. I also took a leap of faith and began creating kpop events for Houston kpop fans of all ages. Our most popular event would be the BTS Movie drive-in that brought out around 300+ kpop fans from all around Texas. We’re currently planning another for the fans that didn’t have a chance to attend the last event.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Say yes to every opportunity.
Something that took me a while to unlearn is that I don’t need to take every opportunity handed to me in order to succeed. Case and point, In March 2019, I was working with a certain company on a project I knew was a bad idea but didn’t have the heart to say anything because my then-business partner, convinced me to take this opportunity because it could mean we’ll get more exposure. In the end, it turned out exactly the way I thought it would, badly. And this experience prompted me to take a step back and reflect on the pattern I was creating.
Any advice for managing a team?
My advice for any team manager is to stay connected and communicate with your team often. As well as have weekly or monthly meetings where everyone has a chance to voice their concerns. This method has worked for my team in the past.
