We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Biggard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Sarah, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to work with and within my local communities. Utilizing local farmers, makers and creators to bake towards a more sustainable future.
I grew up in a foodie and farming family. I don’t ever remember my mother not having a pretty large garden. Every summer we tended it with her and every fall/winter we canned the produce we grew in it. From canned tomatoes, peppers and jams. I have vivid memories shucking corn with my brother and then packaging it for the freezer for winter. All the while acquiring knowledge of how to preserve Ohio’s best stuff, to have all year around. I later became a chef and then pastry chef. A lot of the knowledge translated to my own culinary creations. When I launched The Blonde Bomb Bakery I made it my mission to purchase locally and source sustainably, whenever possible. The best way to care for our communities and farmers, is to take care of the very Earth we all live on. That means working sustainably and utilizing local products. My menus are often very limited and change often, just like the Ohio produce and fruit! I want to offer the very best of what Ohio and others have.
Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hmmm let’s see.
I’m Sarah Biggard, owner and operator of The Blonde Bomb Bakery. I’m 37 and have been with my partner, Phil (Philbert) for 4 years. We have 2 pups and 3 cats. I’m a mobile and online bakery. Not home based, I work out of an industrial, certified, kitchen space. I’m best know for my Bombs, which are decadent layered dessert jars. These are not just cake jars. These are layered dessert jars. Ranging from cake, cheesecake, cobblers, brownie sundaes and MORE! They’re customizable and portable. Meant to go where you go. I’m also pretty well known for my Mini Pies! I love making and eating pie in any capacity!
I’m a former professional Chef/Pastry Chef. Have over 15 years in the industry. Pre pandemic I was a pastry chef for a well known Cbus restaurant group. During the pandemic I was diagnosed with cancer and ended up taking some time away from working. Upon being able to return I decided to officially launch The Blonde Bomb Bakery. I had years of recipes written on scraps of paper and floating around in my head. So I started compiling recipes. I knew my focus was going to be the Bombs (decadent layered dessert jars). It was idea that started it all, years ago. Portable, scratch made, desserts in a jar. I often would have friends and family that would want to try my creations from the restaurants and sometimes I would have extras. I would stuff them in jars and pass them off to friends and family. I soon realized the desserts I was delicately plating in the restaurants, tasted the same stuffed into a jar. That was the ‘BOMB’. :)
I often get asked who my biggest competition is Columbus is. The answer: ME. I don’t compete, I collaborate. I’d rather learn and grow with my fellow creatives, then work against them. We have so much talent in our communities, I love seeing the creative stuff that come out of Columbus and surrounding areas.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Its been a battle to keep this baby going. I originally started off with a team of 6 and then it went down to just me, after 2 years. Not the direction you want to go. I had battled some unfortunate health events and the time away almost ended it all. Fast forward to now and I’m relaunching, again. Starting from ground zero. I guess I have knowledge from before but defitently not crowd and resources. Just keep baking.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Consistency.
