We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Berg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
So many of my clients struggle with similar issues, and yet the approach I take with each one is different. This is the beauty of an individualized approach using a trauma-informed lens. One client, in particular, was struggling with body image and health issues. At first, she was really hung up on losing weight, so we had to break down the question: for what purpose? What would weight loss get you? The answer is almost always the same across my clients: more endurance, more strength, more confidence, and a healthier relationship with food. Aha! So the goal isn’t actually weight loss, right? Weight loss might be a byproduct of reaching those goals, but losing weight won’t always result in them.
When we broke this down, you could see the heaviness lift off her shoulders. The reframe happening in her mind was palpable, revealing how much of her world was rooted in this belief. This is one of the beautiful aspects of somatic coaching. We were able to make significant progress in her health and wellness goals, as well as in her body image, self-love, and confidence!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I’m Sarah Brooke Berg, and I truly do a bit of everything! I like to think of my ADHD as my superpower! My official titles include Board Certified Somatic and Life Coach, Clinical Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner, Reiki Practitioner, Ayurveda Practitioner, Board Certified Holistic Wellness Coach, and Nurse. I’m also a military spouse and volunteer as President of a local Family Readiness Group for my husbands squadron.
My passion for health and wellness stems from my own struggles with chronic illness. Even as a child, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. However, after seeing countless patients, I felt something was missing. That’s when I discovered somatic coaching and a root cause approach. As I applied what I was learning to myself and experienced tangible results, I realized this was my calling. I found a certification course that resonated with me and was accepted into a bachelor’s degree program for Ayurveda Wellness and Integrative Medicine. While I still love nursing and occasionally return to brush up on my skills, helping others through these holistic methods is truly my passion.
With my diverse background and certifications, I can support women in many ways, primarily focusing on health and wellness through an “Health at Every Size” lens. I work with those dealing with chronic illness in marginalized bodies, emphasizing nervous system regulation, self-love, confidence, and body image. Though it may seem like a wide range, these areas are deeply interconnected. Science increasingly supports the link between mind and body, which is crucial in my work.
Turning inward and connecting with the body is often underutilized. When combined with wellness practices and nervous system regulation, these modalities can create profound transformations on multiple levels.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Your clients want to trust you; they want to know that what you’re offering will truly change their lives, and that happens when you build trust. I am open with my clients, not only by sharing and guiding them through modalities but also by sitting with them in silence, holding space for the areas where maybe no one has applauded them before, or those vulnerable spots that have left them feeling alone.
I know this is specific to the coaching space, but I believe it relates to many areas of business. This alone will help build your reputation and referrals. Where are you actively listening to what your clients need or are asking from you? How are you showing up and being vulnerable, relatable, and opening your social media to compassion and kindness? At the end of the day, that is what stands out. It’s what makes your clients trust you: the ability to connect with you and see you as a human in a social media world where everything can feel so fake and curated. We all crave connection and community, so I always think about how I can build that and who I’m speaking to when I make a post or a story. Ultimately, it’s about creating genuine connections that lead to long-term relationships and client growth.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Integrity and vulnerability have been crucial in building my reputation within my market. I have always been open and honest while sharing my values and morals regarding my business and what I represent. This authenticity has significantly contributed to my reputation.
Consistency is also important, but I don’t mean just showing up every day. It’s more about the content you share and your underlying reasons for sharing it. My business has shifted in focus multiple times, but the overall message, energy, and intention have remained clear. This consistency helps build trust and integrity within my market.
Additionally, it’s essential to ask yourself how you can stand out in an authentic way that aligns with your values. Being crystal clear on these aspects is vital and will help you cultivate a strong reputation.
