We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Beim. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I ended up in film by accident. I went to a vo-tech hoping to do theater for writing but I didn’t end up auditioning because I didn’t want to act and while I love theater, the program wasn’t a fit. I tried a few shops but nothing clicked until I learned a film program just opened. After trying it, I knew I found what I wanted to pursue. While I love screenwriting, I also found editing. I did that film shop program all through high school and majored in film in college. Now after graduating 2019, I am a freelance editor.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Sarah Beim, founder of Beim-ish Productions LLC. I ended up in film by pure chance. While I love screenwriting, I also found editing and that became what I focused on. I did that film shop program all through high school then majored in film in college. Now after graduating 2019, I am a freelance assistant editor/editor. I primary specialize in assistant editing or assembly editing for narrative projects but I have edited and worked on a wide variety of films. I love to work on stories with deep meanings and messages and that can be used to bring awareness to current events. I am also making my own project called ‘cataclysm.begins’, a LGBTQ+ Sci-Fi Dystopian web-series that spotlights what is happening in the community.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Film School is great and I loved my time there and the resources/knowledge I got but the best experiences I had were actually going out there and networking. Film can be by-the-book but it’s important to experiment and try to find your own style. Film School can teach very cookie cutter which is great to learn the basic but going out and trying new things, interning with production companies, meeting people, it’s the best way to find your place in this expansive industry.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I found facebook groups and a bunch of the women based organizations sooner but I didn’t until 2017. They are an incredible platform for finding work, networking and I have found so many of my friends and clients. I wouldn’t be where I am in my career without them.
