We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Bednar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
After working with moms and their families in their homes as their postpartum doula I was faced with finding ways to remotely support my clients through video chats and phone calls. I continued to search for additional avenues to offer families community and perspectives from others going through similar family experiences.
Through research and growing of a new digital skill set I created “The Modern Day Tribe Podcast” and a digital postpartum guide.
This podcast features moms and dads sharing their pregnancy, birth and postpartum experiences along with perinatal professionals sharing how they provide parents support through their journey of becoming parents. The postpartum guide covers a wide range of topics focusing on the mom’s needs during postpartum including postpartum recovery, body changes, mental health, and self-care.
While supporting families remotely there is definitely an absence of human touch, however in many ways it broadens the reach of being able to work with a greater number of families digitally.
After the development of “The Modern Day Tribe Podcast” I created a digital presence in the form of a digital postpartum guide, as well as social media accounts to expand the reach to families in as many avenues as possible. While growing the digital skill set of audio & video editing and social media marketing, I decided to create “Honey Moto Media” to help other businesses expand into the digital social landscape.
Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Sarah, mom, postpartum doula, motorcyclist and social media strategist.
As a mother with a passion to help others in their pursuits towards their goals, I am dedicated to making an impact on the world.
I never really had a strong support system going through birth and postpartum of my three babies. I was mislead throughout all three of my pregnancies and postpartum which lead me to begin researching ways to better take care of and advocate for myself and how I could guide mothers through options and choices I wasn’t offered. Providing this guidance became my drive and main focus as I went through training to become a DONA Certified Postpartum Doula.
While working with families in home and setting them up for sustainability to continue thriving as a family long after I finish my work with them, I knew I wanted to extend my reach to help more families. The blessing of having to be faced with finding creative ways to support families digitally gave me the opportunity to expand not only my reach to more families but to also expand my digital knowledge and skill set.
I’ve created not only “The Modern Day Tribe” and an online postpartum guide to serve moms and dads throughout their journey of becoming parents, but also “Honey Moto Media” to help businesses reach a wider client base for their products and services. These include in-person and remote postpartum doula services, the creation of a parent blog, a digital postpartum guide as well as a social media management agency.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I had been working as a postpartum doula for several years, providing support and guidance to new moms in their homes. I cherished the personal connections I formed with each family and the joy of witnessing their transition into parenthood. However, in 2020, with the strict lockdown measures, my ability to provide in-person support was severely limited. I was determined to continue offering my services, however I knew I had to pivot my approach. After much brainstorming and research, I decided to create a digital postpartum guide to support moms online.
I started by assessing the needs and challenges faced by new moms from my training and experience. I recognized many moms were feeling isolated, anxious, and overwhelmed, lacking access to the usual in-person support networks and resources.
I crafted a comprehensive digital postpartum guide. The guide covers a wide range of topics focusing on the mom’s needs during postpartum including postpartum recovery, body changes, mental health, and self-care. My postpartum guide is designed to empower moms to navigate the challenges of early motherhood with confidence and resilience along with fostering a sense of community and connection.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Having a passion for serving other moms during their journey through birth and postpartum along with my hobby of riding motorcycles lead me to creating social media content to share my work, hobbies and lifestyle. I expanded my sharing capabilities on social media with a clear vision: to share my love for serving families, riding motorcycle and living a healthy lifestyle with the world.
With these niches I understood the importance of consistency in building my audience. I committed to posting regularly. Whether it was a list of tips for new moms or a ride on my motorcycle with friends I maintain a steady stream of high-quality posts. I make it a point to actively engage with my audience. I respond to comments, ask questions, and foster a sense of community on these accounts. By showing genuine interest in their thoughts and experiences, I continue to build trust and loyalty among the communities.
I started leveraging collaborations and partnerships to expand my reach. I collaborated with fellow perinatal providers along with motorcycle products whose values aligned with mine. These collaborations not only introduced me to new audiences but also added depth and variety to my content. I understand the importance of staying informed and adapting to changes. I keep up with the latest trends, experiment with new features and formats, and analyze metrics to understand what resonates most with these online communities. By staying flexible and open-minded, I remain relevant and engaged with followers. Through dedication, creativity, and authenticity, I’ve built not just a following but a community of like-minded parents, motorcycle enthusiasts and those wanting to live a healthy lifestyle. .
