We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Bartels recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Unlimited time off. For your mental health. I believe that if you spend all of your days working that you don’t make you a priority and you become burned out. I want you to still LOVE what you do in 10 years. We all work 4 day work weeks. That way to have 3 days to take care of things in your personal life. It’s important to have a healthy work/life balance.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sarah. I have been in the beauty business for 20 years now. I’ve “ shop hopped” over the years and I’m Not proud of it but it made me who I am today. I was taking notes in every place along the way. Not all of my experiences have been bad with every place I’ve worked but I’m clearly not there anymore for one reason or another and that’s okay. I was gaining knowledge traveling through life doing what I LOVE so that I could finally open my very own barbershop and create the most loving, caring, welcoming to all environment for my clients and the other professionals I am Lucky enough to work alongside. So naturally “Good vibes barbershop”
Was born.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Nick or “ Saint Nick” So what I like to call him. Nick was a client who turned into one of my very best friends over the years. Oneday I was working in this shop with an old colleague who had just opened his own shop and I needed a place to go. It was a nice shop. Really nice. But the values weren’t there. I felt I had come too far in my career to work for someone like this so I vented to my friend/client nick. He listened and I was making my exit strategy. He was going to help
Me write a business plan so that I could apply for a small business loan to open my own business. The very next day he sent me a text while as work and asked me to
Come Outside. This wasn’t strange because we were friends I just figured he wanted to
Come say hi. No, that
Wasn’t it. He called Me outside to ask me if I’d like to set up a professional business meeting with him. He wanted to invest in ME and MY DREAM. So, here we are 1 1/2 years later and we’re still rockin’ nick is the BEST❤️
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That not all Money is good money. Sometimes you have to walk away if the feeling just isn’t right. Trust your instincts and if something is too good to be true it probably is.
