We were lucky to catch up with Sara Torres recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
During my undergrad at Kennesaw State University, I had a professor who constantly preached to “adapt and overcome.” I honestly didn’t spend too much time thinking about that concept at first but it finally hit me about halfway through the semester. This professor liked to have us come prepared with 3×5 index cards that we would use to submit quiz answers on. One day there were a few of us who didn’t have cards for whatever reason and we were all panicking. She looked at us and said “adapt and overcome” and it finally hit us that we didn’t need an actual index card, we just needed something close to submit our answers on. One single sheet of notebook paper did the trick as we split it up and were able to complete the assignment,
“Adapt and overcome” is a concept that I still carry with me to this day because, no matter what happens, you do what you can to figure out a solution. At one point during my professional career (prior to starting my own company), we were hosting an influencer event and had some tri-fold pamphlets made but they were folded backwards. Unfortunately, due to the craze of the day, it was just before the event when we realized it. Having no time to face Friday evening traffic at I-75/85 in a race to have more printed, I grabbed the box and hurriedly re-folded all 150 of them. Would I have liked to spend that “down-to-the-wire” time doing final prep for the event at hand? Absolutely, but we couldn’t display the pamphlets as-is and was no time to have them redone.
It’s not a secret code to the universe, but “adapt and overcome” is definitely a mindset and approach which helps me navigate situations when the conditions are lacking and a solution is imminently needed. I really should dig through my files to locate that professor so I can thank her…
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Before going full-time with my LLC, I offered freelance marketing services to small businesses to assist with their needs- whether it was developing social media content, establishing email campaigns, or designing promotional signage. My day job was Marketing Manager (later turned Marketing Director) at a small business with multiple retail locations. For several years, I oversaw a their in-house marketing efforts for traditional and digital media. It was an immersive role that was very hands-on so I was able to develop my understanding of how business, marketing, and ROI go hand-in-hand. Some of my clients are local to Georgia and several are in other states, but I really enjoy getting to know business owners on a personal level while helping address their marketing needs. After creating my LLC I’ve been able to assist small businesses in the following industries: Agriculture; Equestrian; Food & Beverage; Floral; Luxury Goods; and Therapeutic Services (to name a few). Retainer services are offered for clients who prefer a consistent marketing presence and individual project needs work best for clients who have upcoming trade shows, Grand Openings, new products, etc. One thing I’m most proud of is that the majority of my business (95%) comes from referrals and repeat clients. To me, a client referral is the ultimate compliment as it showcases that they enjoyed working with me and consider my efforts to be a worthwhile investment.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
There are endless aspects that go into building a reputation but my top ones are delivering on-time, providing quality work with attention to detail, maintaining a positive outlook, and being genuinely excited to work with a client.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love seeing my work “out in the wild” either on branded merchandise, in a magazine, or on social media platforms. There’s definitely a sense of accomplishment I feel when a client is using, enjoying, and sharing their design.
