We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sara Rutten a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
As a business owner we always have the days where we wonder or desire the “ease” of a regular job. Then I remember that I used to have that “regular corporate job” and I lost myself in the grind of that world.
On cold winter days when everyone else (or it feels like everyone else in the world) is warm and safe in their house not worrying about animals being cold, frozen water, needing feed, needing new bedding; those are the days I wish I had a “normal” job.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Along with my Husband Jim and son Henry, we are the owners of The 100 Acre Homestead and The Honey Pot food trailer. We operate our farm with organic practices and strive to maintain the highest level of care for our animals. When you come to the fall festival days you are welcome with big smiles and guaranteed to have a great time.
I make quality items for sale with as much from right here on the farm as we possibly can (goats milk lotion, goats milk shampoo, goats milk soap, tallow balm, bees wax chapstick, bees) along with all the meat, honey, yarn and eggs we sell.
Our food trailer is a true farm to table food trailer, we make all our food from scratch. Our meat is raised right here following organic practices on our Homestead. Our baked goods are baked from scratch using only NON-GMO and Organic ingredients. We offer all our items in Gluten Free and many also in dairy free. I pride myself in quality of what we serve. All items that we do not raise or make has to meet the standards to be used on our trailer.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
When we started homesteading it was just for us to raise the food we ate as a family. I have a extreme passion to know what goes in, on and around my body. I worked corporate life doing food packaging and I knew that wasn’t my calling. That I was meant to share my passion and educate others.
When we bought our 100 acres of land I had a burning desire to make a living off the land. I didn’t know what that meant at the time but over the years I slowly started adding more animals to raise for other families while working full time. The 100 Acre Homestead just organically happened. We put so much passion, blood, sweat and tears into creating what our family has today. When I approached my husband about adding farm to table food to our fall events it happened rather quickly and we went from just a building here on the homestead to a trailer that we take out in our local community.
I love what I do and wouldn’t change it for the world.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I am a big advocate for personal development and daily devotionals. I will say one that I keep going back to over and over is draw the circle a 40 day devotional and it has truly changed my mindset about asking GOD for the big things in our lives. Every new year I start my year off with this book, I feel that it sets my mind right and helps me vision what I want for the year. I pray around it and then I turn it over to God to do his thing.
