We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sara Rosales a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
Coincidently, I began working in the corporate and business law space around this time and fell in love with it. I learned a lot about various business industries from the start-up phase to their dissolution and I advanced quickly. Legal colleagues and friends began reaching out to me for guidance on setting up their businesses, that’s when I realized there was a huge demand for it. As I became more involved with various entrepreneurs and small business owners, I also realized that many people were confused about business entity structures and how they work. It was the confirmation I was seeking to expand and work on a business entity course.
I formed my business in 2021, but had the vision for Mujerex in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. I had just graduated law school and had thought my life would take me in the direction I had always planned and worked toward all my life. I thought I would practice in criminal or immigration law, however, I feel like God had another plan for me. I had two close family members pass away and it changed my perspective on life forever. I knew that I wanted more from life. I didn’t want to live to work and if I was going to work as much as most law firms required, then I might as well work that hard for myself and build something for my family.
In retrospect, I do not wish I would have started sooner because I think everything I had learned and experienced up to that point had been in preparation for all the uncertainty, drive, work-ethic, motivation, and knowledge that is required to be a business owner. Entrepreneurship can feel like a long and sometimes lonely path. The imposter-syndrome you experience as an entrepreneur is real and had I not had the confidence my education and experience provided, the fear of failure would have probably crushed me. So, I am glad I started when I did.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the founder and CEO of Mujerex Enterprise LLC. A company formed to empower women and minority business owners and entrepreneurs through education and collective community support. The three pillars of my company are empowerment, education and community. In my role as a business consultant, I provide consulting on business entity formation, strategy and planning. I educate entrepreneurs through workshops in the community, curated events and through my social media accounts. I have also developed a business entity basics course that will be launching soon. Some of the topics I cover during workshops, events and in my business course include: Sole proprietorships, limited liability companies, corporations, business liability & exposure, entity compliance and how to set a good business foundation (among many other topics).
What sets me apart from others in this business is that I am able to look at a small business from various perspectives and shed light on issues that may not be apparent to others. I use my legal background and business acumen and can see how business operations are affected. Since I have worked with various companies, I have been exposed to issues that affect both service and product-based industries. Additionally, as a small business owner myself, I can relate to many of the challenges small business owners face. I personally love working with start-up businesses because I feel like they are the ones that need the most guidance. It’s very rewarding when I form a new company and my clients light up at the thought that they are now a new business owner!
I am currently most proud that I am finally able to give back to my community in a meaningful way and do what I love one business at a time!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building a good reputation is key for any business, but it also takes time. I think people can tell when you are being genuine or just looking to sell a service or product. What has helped me build my reputation and get clients in this space with minimal marketing is that I genuinely want to help people educate themselves, not just perform a service and get a client.
Providing workshops and exposing my services has helped tremendously in people getting to know me personally and not just my services. It’s also an opportunity for me to share some knowledge on a certain issue they may be facing. I like to ask questions specific to their business to see how my services may fit their needs. I have found that sometimes people don’t know what they don’t know, so it helps to ask questions and see what information you can offer.
The second thing that I believe helped me build my reputation is networking. I like to meet people in other spaces and industries because what I have found is that business is a universal language that opens the door to unexpected connections, referrals and opportunities. Don’t be afraid to collaborate and work with others, we don’t have to do everything alone or by ourselves. These networking opportunities are a great way to build your reputation.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that business is a competitive market place. This sounds crazy, I know, but I have learned that while there may be others doing what you do or something similar, you shouldn’t invest any time stressing out about it or comparing yourself to what is on social media. At the end of the day, nobody knows what you know about your product or service like you do, and nobody can provide that service or product like you can.
It took me a while to realize that I have no competition in the space or industry I am in because ultimately my life experiences and knowledge are unique to me, and as a result my services will be different than those offering similar services.
An example of this is a client I was recently referred. He is a Spanish-speaking business owner that had worked with other attorneys in the past and had bad experiences that left him feeling mistrustful of working with anyone in the legal profession. But he needed help forming a new business. After spending some time with him and his wife discussing his cleaning business, he told me he was relieved and happy to work with someone that can speak his native language and was able to explain difficult concepts he could understand. It was a reminder that the services I provide are unique to me and that I am helping a demographic of people that otherwise would probably not be helped in the way they need.
