We were lucky to catch up with Sara Luna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Texicana Candle Company started 10 years ago in my kitchen and garage. Originally it was just a candle company providing uniquely scented candles at local farmers markets. In 2020 I decided to incorporate the spiritual aspect. A leap of faith.
Sara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sara Luna Gonzales, Owner of Texicana Candle Company & 3rd Eye Mystic. I am an entrepreneur. My businesses centers around providing spiritual products and services to aid my local communities.
What sets my business apart from others
is we strive to keep products and services as authentic and as traditional as possible. Candles and body care are all homemade and hand poured. The services we provide are practices, remedies and rituals handed down by many generations. We are divinely guided by our elders in these practices.
Folk magic has been practiced in my family for years, both on my mother’s and father’s side. It’s a way of life for so many Latinos and people of color. Our elders always had a remedy or solution for every situation. We were taught to never lose faith and to unite with the saints and angels. We witnessed how collectively, persistent prayers moved mountains. Every family has stories of miracles happening for loved ones, because of the old ways.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I believe my journey has had many moments of resilience. Owning and operating occult stores comes with it’s own judgements, and problems at times. But also being devoted to death, being devoted to Santa Muerte. Being a devotee requires you to be resilient. You have to be ready to represent her and stand firm in your beliefs.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Abandoning what I was taught in catholicism and school was essential in my spiritual journey. We are taught half-truths both in school and church. I find fulfilment in learning my ancestry and relearning their ways.
