Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sara Luna. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I began my artistic journey in digital illustration and later pursued Visual Arts education. I wouldn’t change a thing—I believe each step led me to where I am now. Digital illustration shaped my unique design approach while exploring acrylic yarn and then dyeing my own yarn led me to spinning and creating custom eight-tone gradients for my pieces. Each skill I acquired is essential for my current artwork.
In today’s digital age, learning can be expedited by leveraging the wealth of online resources. Dedication and motivation are key. The internet provides abundant opportunities to overcome obstacles. Ultimately, our willingness to explore, experiment, and step out of our comfort zones is the only true impediment to learning.
To summarize, my artistic journey has been diverse and fulfilling. Starting with digital illustration and pursuing Visual Arts education, I’ve honed skills vital to my current work. Embracing online opportunities and maintaining a proactive mindset are essential to overcoming obstacles and fostering continuous growth. I’m grateful for my path and excited for the ongoing journey of self-improvement and artistic exploration ahead.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a fiber artist currently living and creating in Salt Lake City, UT, though I was born in Chile and carry the vibrant culture and traditions of my homeland with me in my work. My artistic journey began with my pursuit of degrees in visual arts and digital illustration, which laid the foundation for my exploration into the world of fiber art.
My work combines weaving, stitching, and hand spinning to create unique pieces of art. I begin by dyeing the fiber black and then use a drum carder to blend it with white, creating beautiful gradients (just like mixing paint!) Once I spin the yarn, I can start bringing my art to life.
I start by weaving a canvas as the base for my artwork. Then, I use stitching to create captivating portraits. The combination of weaving and stitching seamlessly comes together, resulting in captivating and expressive artwork that showcases my creativity.
By blending these techniques, I can craft portraits that go beyond traditional boundaries. Weaving, stitching, and hand spinning form the core of my artistic process, offering a distinctive and captivating perspective.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my craft is the process of hand-spinning my own yarn, I find joy in creating gradients that are entirely unique to my style, and in the tactile experience of working with natural fibers.
Through my art, I strive to honor the beauty of traditional Chilean textiles while pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this medium. My work is a reflection of my passion for portraits, and my dedication to my craft is evident in every piece I create.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One thing non-creatives may struggle to understand is the relentless drive behind creating art. It’s an intrinsic need, not just a passion. Giving up comforts, renting a small room to live in, and working regular jobs for essentials are sacrifices creatives are willing to make. Art is our purpose and life feels empty without it. The commitment of creatives is all-consuming. We dedicate most of our time and energy to our art, even if it means minimalistic living. It’s a profound devotion rooted in the understanding that art gives life meaning.
The creative journey is deeply personal and hard to convey. However, embracing and supporting artists can lead to a more inclusive society. Art inspires, provokes thought, and fosters understanding. Appreciating the drive and dedication behind the creative journey benefits both individuals and communities.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist and a creative, the most rewarding aspect lies in creating my own materials. Spinning and dyeing my own yarn brings a deep sense of fulfillment and connection to my work. Spinning. Weaving and stitching are meditative and therapeutic experiences, immersing me in the creative process from beginning to end.
Blending gradients empowers me to bring my artistic vision to life with control and intention.
The creative freedom enhances outcomes and strengthens my bond with the work. Creating every aspect, from yarn to final artwork, brings immeasurable satisfaction and reinforces my artistic path.
