Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sara Hendrix. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I experiment with many different art supplies and non-art supplies. When visiting studios and galleries, I am intrigued by the new and adventurous ways that artwork is produced. I’ve boiled paper in a turkey baster on my grill to develop some wonderful eco-prints. Some were not so great (as I learned to not ask my husband to keep an eye on them). I still have the set, and it is fun to share the burned pieces with my patrons.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey to creating mixed media, abstract pieces began later in my life. I am a retired public-school teacher. While teaching math at an art magnet high school, I finally had the time to renew my pursuit of creating art. I began taking a variety of classes at the nearby Spruill Arts Center, including drawing, color theory, and composition. It was when I began gaining insight into mixed media and abstract creations that I found my calling. I love trying out new products and techniques and learning about process from established artists.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I am always meeting artists and learning from them. I talk to many artists and collectors about my techniques, using unusual materials such as salt and rust, and the research I complete prior to beginning a process. This may include lessons learned from these techniques, such as what happens if the artist does not remove all of the salt from a work. “The salt collects the moisture from the air and becomes a “weeping painting”.”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goals have always included pursuing multiple creative endeavors. I have participated in glass blowing, working with Geli plates. and teaching my grandsons how to make their own pieces. I consider gardening, cooking, and yoga to be part of my creative process.
