We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara Goodson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Sara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My biggest hero is my 12yo son Aidan. Aidan is special needs, he has Duchenne muscular dystrophy which is a neuromuscular incurable/terminal disease. Aidan is in a power wheel chair and is my biggest inspiration. He influences my designs so much. He’s the most awesome sc-if loving boy I’ve ever known. I started Sauce Thrift because I wanted to be able to work from home so I could be his full time care giver.. I’m constantly asking Aidan about helping me design pieces. He even enjoys watching me sew. He has taught me to be to be so strong and to never give up no matter what. That little boy is my best friend and I do this all for him.
Sara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In Jan 2020 I decided one day I wanted to sew. So I sat down and taught myself by Feb 1, 2020 I bought my first sewing machine and started my Instagram page @sauce.thrift. I make up cycle custom clothing. All my pieces are made from second hand sustainable garments. My slogan is “treasured finds, turned one of a kind”. I feel what sets sauce thrift from others is my vision I have for clothes and my prices. I was very poor in my 20’s and I just want everyone to be able to have cool clothing at an affordable price. What I am most proud of is no matter all the hardships that have been tossed towards me and my son we have keep going and we are coming out on top. Our drive is so strong and we can and will not accept failure. Sauce thrift will be a household name one day and I don’t want to stop until that happens. I want my readers to know that from the bottom of my heart thank you so much for your support. This is my dream life and because of the kindness of strangers I’m able to live this life, so thank you.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was in a very abusive relationship in 2020 both physically and mentally. Me and Aidan were able to escape that all while still sewing and running a business.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
How I started the sauce thrift inventory, I raided my own closet. I had/have a lot of cool clothes and I started by cutting up my old t shirts and sewing them onto flannels. Which then progressed into other things and then me learning how to make other things.
