We were lucky to catch up with Sara Free recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
A friend of mine once told me that when you are getting ready to make certain (big) changes in your career and/or life, think about what people will say at your funeral. Since then, I have been struck by that thought/concept. Though death or dying is not a topic that I like to think about very much, I hope that whatever legacy I leave behind is one that makes everything that I touched a little bit better.
Although I know that it’s a very basic statement, I do hope that when people think of me, they think of a good person, one who despite whatever character flaws I possess, tried really hard and did all they could to make the world a little bit easier for everyone else.
Kindness and thoughtfulness are two characteristics I hope will be remembered about me. In particular, I hope that I have made or made people feel loved and heard, especially those I love. As well as encouraging others to be strong, to be their true selves, and to believe in their abilities. It’s importan
t for them to have the belief that they can always do the right thing and that they are capable of doing so.
In addition, I would like to be seen as someone who is and was a hard worker. Regardless of the task, I gave it all I had; and I tried to be creative as much as possible.
I hope that my creativity inspires others and gives them ideas for their own work. And I hope that when someone thinks of me or talks about who I am, I would like to hope that they think of me as someone who has a beautiful soul.
That’s what I hope for my legacy. Someone who was kind, creative, reliable, thoughtful, and generous.
Sara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am creative design professional with a background in industrial design and graphic design. I have extensive experience in branding and visual identity, creative direction, art direction, photography, and print/digital collateral layout.
I have brought my creative expertise to a wide range of clients. I began my career in 2014, joining Jarvis Cutting Tools as the company’s first in-house Graphic Designer. During her tenure there, she became Marketing Director and Brand Manager, and in 2018, she joined Portman Architects as their Brand Specialist and Graphic Designer.
In 2021, Sara joined a local marketing agency and then later that year, she left the marketing agency and joined an Atlanta commercial real estate development firm, Portman Holdings. I am current;y Portman’s Senior Creative Manager; and I am responsible for curating the branding and creative identity for the Portman brand and all of it’s assets. I am valued for my attention to detail, determination, and honesty.
Outside of my corporate life, I am an artist. I mostly paint and dabble a little bit in photography, and freelance design work.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Instagram. So far, these past 2 years, that has been my best source of new clients. I’ll take pictures and post my art or designs on my account, and that’s usually when I make a sale off my shop site or I’ll get a DM asking if I do any special commission work.
And I do love it. I love that somehow by me posting my art, it reaches someone, and then I can drive more traffic to my work or do a special one-of-a-kind piece for someone.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When someone is just so over the moon happy with their piece that they either bought from me or that i made special just for them.
Especially the tattoo commissions, I love those so much! I love people asking me to draw something for them and I am even more excited and happy to see them get it done!
