We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sara Barone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sara, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’ve just finished up writing the original score for Planet Earth III alongside Hans Zimmer and Jacob Shea. It’s been a massive privilege to be a part of this landmark series narrated by David Attenborough, which has been 5 years in the making. It was an immensely fulfilling experience to create the music for this 8-part series which uses cutting-edge filmmaking technology to tell the stories of many of the world’s most remarkable species and demonstrate the new challenges they face in our modern world. We had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of musicians and orchestras from various parts of the world to help bring the score to life.

Sara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ever since I was very young I’ve been making music. I studied Classical piano for many years before venturing into the composing world. After many years of performing I found myself more drawn to writing music rather than being on stage. I became really excited by the process of collaborating with other creatives to tell a story, which is really what caused me to delve into composition for film and television. I like to find unexpected ways to find the heart of a story. When I studied music growing up, my favorite artists were those who were fearless in their creativity and would challenge the way audiences experienced music that had been around for centuries. This philosophy of striving to push boundaries stuck with me as I ventured into composition. Much of my inspiration is found through experimenting with musicians from various backgrounds and cultures to find the concept for the score. In writing music to tell a story I often feel that less is more, and the simplest way to achieve an emotion is often the most effective.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to continue having the privilege of writing music every day and challenge myself to push the boundary for each project. Through my work I hope to continue having the chance to be fearless in my pursuit to tell meaningful stories.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a composer is the collaboration with other creatives on a shared vision. There is nothing quite like hearing an orchestra or even a single musician bring your music to life after months of work. I think one of the most fulfilling parts of the job is fostering long-term collaborative relationships with filmmakers and fellow musicians. I believe the best work comes from deep-rooted creative collaborations.
