We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Saphyre Skye Velasco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Saphyre, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Honestly, The biggest risk I’ve taken was the decision to leave everything behind. My father, an immigrant, was my biggest supporter in my choice. Wanting not only the best in life, but to discover beyond what he was capable of. In pursuit of my dreams, he helped me attend higher education. As the first to leave home and graduate, I’ve felt this intense pressure to succeed not only for myself, but for my family. It was easy to give up during those times of stress, but knowing how proud my family is in how far I’ve gotten pushes me to keep going every single day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I had always been interested in acting, and it wasn’t until I took my first acting class at ‘The Second City’ in Chicago where I felt something I never knew I wanted. The difference in Energy, the array of people who wanted to learn the same new things as me helped me put myself out there. Finding a community where others wanted the same as me made me feel understood and at home, and with this discovery it dawned on me what I wanted in life. After moving here to New York, I’ve taken the next step in realizing my dreams. Starting my own production company named ‘Some Kid’s Production Company’ to promote myself and creative work on my level. While small, I know that like with any seed, it will take time to blossom into something beautiful. Looking ahead I’m most excited to help produce films that not only I wish were there in my younger days, but films that give fellow actors the space to create such media they sought out themselves.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe having full hands on control for your own creative works is rewarding in itself and to be able to provide that for not only myself but the people I cherish is one of the greatest gifts I could receive. Along with that I want to produce something that honors my heritage while still being digestible to the common audience. Some of the short films I produce will help me achieve this goal, while I also plan on producing horror films, I plan on sharing my family’s experiences and expanding people’s minds on Mexican culture.Providing representation for people and children in the Hispanic/Latine world without promoting stereotypes. Growing up it was hard to find such representation without some insane stereotype connected to it. it became exhausting to watch, like someone was telling me who I was without knowing who I am. But, my end goal is not films made by Mexicans for Mexicans, it’s Mexicans for the world. I don’t want my films gate kept with people thinking “oh hey by the way this is only something Mexican american people can understand”. While some of my films will have a theme tied directly to my heritage, they are more so stories that are interesting for anyone to watch.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To not only be able to do this for myself but for my family. To show what I know from how I was raised and inspire others to embrace who we are and be okay with the ugly things in life just as much as the beautiful ones. Some people judge where you come from as if you had that choice, so instead of wallowing in that pain I decided to create something out of it. Not only that but also be able to create almost absolutely anything I want.
