We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sanya Kerney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sanya, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
Looking back in time, if given the opportunity, I would’ve undoubtedly started my business even sooner. Beginning my business in May of 2014, I was scared, confused, and frankly, completely lost. Having a 4th grader of my own at home, I knew that I had to be a role model to her young self and accomplish goals that I now knew were attainable. If 10 years before that someone had traveled back in time and told me I would be running my own childcare development center, I would’ve laughed and called them absurd! Part of the reason I believe starting my entrepreneurial journey earlier would’ve been beneficial to me is because I could’ve had the opportunity to refine my networking skills, gained experience in the hiring process and employment field, and most importantly, created hundreds of more meaningful connections and relationships with the parents and children that my business would have benefitted had I started earlier! The single-handedly most prominent part of my job is being able to know that I made a substantial contribution and difference in the lives of local families, who entrust my faculty, staff, and administration to take the caregiving and young education of their children’s beautiful, bright, and capable minds within our hands.

Sanya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Working with children has been a lifelong passion of mine. While other kids would play cops and robbers, house, or tag, I would line up my stuffed animals and teach them different lessons on various topics. I nurtured this love for education and pursued my higher education, through my masters, in hopes of being able to teach for the rest of my life. I never thought that I would one day open my own center, but I am beyond blessed and glad that I did. Kiddies Korner is proud to be a daycare center that thrives on being a welcoming & safe place for children to grow and build bonds and friendships that last a lifetime. We work together with parents to cultivate a personalized learning environment for their child.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
While old fashioned, word of mouth has definitely been Kiddies Korner’s best friend. We do our absolute best to make it a guarantee that every child and their parents have a special, connected, and intimate relationship with each of our staff members to ensure quality education and emotional development. Because of this, the biggest attraction and reputation builder was how carefully curated each child’s experience as a student is. Our parents are all on a first name basis with our teacher’s, and no child is ever unnoticed or unattended to. From keeping in touch with graduated families to having families enroll while their child is still in the womb and unborn, I like to mimic the Kiddies Korner experience as if my own daughter was attending preschool all over again; providing the same care, love, and attention to each child as if they were my own.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
