We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sanvernetas Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sanvernetas, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2016, I was working on the Production Control team at a Toyota plant in Mississippi. While studying Business & Marketing Management in college, I worked the night shift, all while pursuing my creative dreams of becoming a creative director, wardrobe stylist, and model. My sister, Porsha, proposed an opportunity that changed everything: to move with her to Philadelphia and pursue my fashion ambitions on the East Coast.
Leaving my job security, family, and close friends behind was daunting, but the words of my late mother grounded me. She always told me, “Please get out of Mississippi and make something of yourself. I may not be here to see that day, but I need you to take heed”. Her guidance was the push I needed.
When news of my departure spread through the company, it was as if a controversial headline had hit. One of the plant managers made a comment that has stayed with me ever since. He said, “I heard you’re leaving us and moving to Philly. One of two things is going to happen to you: you’ll either get taken out by a bullet or freeze to death”. The sinister edge of those words could have held me back, but instead, they fueled my resolve. They reminded me that I’m divinely protected and that I have control over my own destiny.
Now, eight years later, I feel like I’m on top of the world. I produce passion projects that carry stories through time and space, I’m able to assist others with reimagining themselves in their true form, and I’ve found a deep joy in the realm of creation.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey y’all! I’m a dedicated Image Director, Creative Director, Wardrobe Stylist, former Sr. Fashion Editor and runway/print model with a proven track record in overseeing productions, including editorials and creative projects. I’m adept at combining business acumen with a deep understanding of the fashion realm. With over 9+ years of professional experience, my mission is to defy archaic beauty standards, replacing them with audacious individuality and personality-filled fashion choices. I specialize in helping clients reimagine beauty beyond their imperfections by connecting them with a personal style/aesthetic that is transformational—giving them the confidence to become the best version of themselves.
I landed my very first client at just five years old. Yes, it was my mom. And no, she didn’t pay me in cash—she gave me something far more valuable. She gave me the freedom to be fully me. I can still picture her asking for my advice on pairing blouses, pants, dresses, accessories and shoes for church or everyday outings. Her openness to my opinions let me explore my own style and nurtured my creative instincts. Coupled with my endless joy in raiding her closet for that perfect statement piece, these moments gave me the courage to step into my purpose.
That same excitement I felt at five years old is still with me today. Whether I’m directing a creative project, aligning someone’s public image, styling a client, or walking the runway, I know I’m serving a greater purpose: inspiring people to embrace what’s buried deep within themselves—what truly reflects who they are—rather than following what’s trending.
What I’m most proud of are the testimonies that show how this work truly changes lives. Seeing someone transform into the person they’ve always aspired to be fills me with a deep, unwavering joy.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Freedom—true freedom in art means creating without constraints. Art comes in countless forms, but I believe they all share one thing: surrendering to both the art and oneself. It’s about allowing the creative process to shape you, even in uncomfortable ways, so that you can look back and see the masterpiece—your personal journey—that emerged.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Throughout my career, there have been moments when I wanted to give up completely. I’ve faced my own struggles with mental health, including suicide attempts. The challenges of working as a freelance artist, especially in a volatile economy, often took a heavy toll. I experienced days where I couldn’t get out of bed, turned down opportunities, and withdrew from friends. I remember one day, praying I wouldn’t wake up the next morning.
But through therapy, the support of loved ones, spiritual maintenance, and surrendering to the journey, I’ve found a way forward. I’m in a better place than I ever have been.
Mental health is real, and we can’t keep ignoring it.
