Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Santiago Cubillos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Santiago thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
My plans while I was finishing high school were to attend La Sorbonne in Paris for which I prepare studying French and relating on my own natural skills as a fine artist. Unfortunately life had other plans and move me away from my original Colombia to Madrid and finally NYC when I’ve been a resident since the beginning of the century.
Fortunately because this turn of events I ended up studying at Hunter college, first Art History and finally Fine Arts to reach graduation by 2019.
Since approximately 2014 I’ve been working professionally in my Art and doing sales and it’s getting more demanding and difficult but fulfilling in the past years right after the pandemic.
I think we all have a specific paths to follow and this was mine, so far I’m grateful and happy where I am.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My work looks to explore freedom and manipulation of the drawn line with a technique of involving a fusion of materials, outlooks, and diverse inspirations from classics of Renaissance to nowadays Social Media posts. A fusion of Social imagery from past and present as a synergy can produce works which are both conceptual and aesthetically pleasing in equal measures.
The choice of materials represents another aspect of the layered reality I’m depicting. Mix media such as watercolor, acrylic, pencil and pastels are the result of one body, a unity that has parts as we humans are composed by different backgrounds, ideologies, and DNA.
My vision is to have the viewer become a part of the piece and see themselves in it. Creating a captivating fantasy allows the viewer to immerse into the depth of the art piece.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I’m getting myself a good amount of education on this topic of NFTs and getting ready on the creative part. Hopefully will be enjoying OpenSea and its pleasures by 2025… work in progress!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In learning about others we learn about ourselves and hopefully find ways to live together, to embrace and better understand each other.
Our varied backgrounds and experiences within our city and society are our greatest source of strength, but if we fail as a society to respect learning we become inhumane and untold tragedy follows.
We all have a responsibility to actively participate in our democracy as informed citizens, to collectively refine, demand and enact justice.
Educating ourself further about the legacy of racial injustice in this country is a key piece of this.
All the accumulate knowledge we hold reminds us that we are capable, yes, of horror, but on balance, we are still capable together of imagining and achieving better.
We should led the fight against ignorance to support understanding, empathy, and solidarity with education. This mission must be reinforced in difficult moments to stand with all our communities against injustice and racism.
