We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sanina Barber a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sanina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning my craft! It took me years to under this. I came out the womb knowing how to sing (haha) but actually learning it is different. Even though you are blessed/anointed with a gift you must study that gift. This is where your creativity lies and the understanding of it. Ear training is the best form of studying. This will shift your vocal approach and how well you can master your music. Growing up, all I knew was church and there is a difference with singing in church and really knowing your gift. We often just sing at church and never worry about the techniques but techniques push you to be greater and protects your instrument.
Sanina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, my name is Sanina Barber. I am a worship leader, independent artist, and a teacher. I have been singing my whole life and it has always been a place of healing for me. I also released two of my newest singles “Champion” and “No Longer Bound” in 2022. I have a podcast entitled “Dear Worship Leaders,” that air every third Monday. I received my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from North Carolina Central University. While at NCCU I was one of the founding members of SAI (Music Fraternity for women). I’ve won several singing competitions throughout her career such as Wilson’s Best, Pepsi, and Showtime at The Apollo. I am the Founder/CEO of a non-profit organization called Cancer Interrupted. Cancer Interrupted has been in business for six year. The foundation of the organization is in memory of a loving husband and father, Pastor Tracy Barber. I’m a worshiper at heart and she uses her passion for the glory of God and I been called to the kingdom to usher the presence of the Lord in the atmosphere where lives are changed, delivered and made whole.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes! I want to build an empire. I want people to be able to use Sanina Barber Ministries as a main source, They are able to get artist development, record, interview tips, money management, and etc. I want to build an empire were we are the example across the board.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
So many but the biggest one is doing it my way! It’s so rewarding. I am not in a race just want to be intentional and impactful.
