We recently connected with Sanika Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Sanika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind my mission is becoming a mother. As a mother I developed a different set of goals and a stronger drive to become successful. I wanted my child to grow up seeing mom working hard and enjoying the results. I also wanted her to see how to treat and interact with people by providing impeccable customer service and giving each client undivided attention and care. My job as a Master Cosmetologist and salon owner is to enhance the beauty in every single client and provide a place where people can get super glammed up or just maintain their natural look. I even offer transportation services to the salon for the elderly or teenagers who aren’t able to drive yet. There’s literally a service for every type of client!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the beauty industry at a very early age watching my mother work at a beautician. I became very fascinated by all of the different hairstyles she would do and how creative she was. All through high school and college I would do all of my family and friends hair and nails. After graduating college with a theatre degree I knew that I would need a backup plan. I decided to go to hair school before moving to Atlanta where I produced and directed stage plays and did all the hair and makeup. After moving back to Michigan and having my daughter I decided to open my own beauty salon and show my daughter what it’s like to be an entrepreneur just in case she decides to take the same path.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses
Yes. I just recently purchased the Polished Parlour in Troy, Michigan. The process was literally seem less. The previous owners were motivated sellers which helped with the purchase, but over all I was eager to start this new journey as a “Boss Mom”. I made sure I prepared to do business the very next day after they moved out. They moved out December 31, 2021. I opened January 1, 2022.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Saved and saved. I cut expenses where I could that helped me save and I eventually ran across a business that I could afford and I bought it with my own money!
