We were lucky to catch up with Sani Field recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sani, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
This is an interesting question, and one I think is really important. The answer is yes and no. My schedule is super flexible in that I can leave town at the drop of a dime (since all work is done remotely with clients), but my husband’s schedule is less forgiving. While he worked remotely during the 2020 pandemic shutdown and was just as productive, he likes to be in the office when he can. And, let’s face it, with corporate America, paid vacation is accrued over time, so there are some limits there as well.
I’ve been told that I should take vacations and completely disconnect, but the thought of that makes me cringe. I have a very capable team to pick up the slack, but I really like to have my finger on the pulse whenever possible. And that could mean a quick two-hour work day to catch up. For me, coming back to a slew of emails after vacation is not palatable. And that’s partly why I don’t ever disconnect. On my honeymoon about 6 years ago I was forced to because we were on a boat for a few days, but you better believe I logged into my email as soon as I had internet access. I had my laptop with me at the hospital at the birth of both my kids. Within a few hours of delivering each one I was back to work. That sounds crazy, but it’s really not. My work is clearly part of my identity, and I’m totally okay with that.
Sani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sani (sunny), and I am the founder of SunnySide Social Media, LLC, a digital marketing and web development firm. I have a really funny husband and two delightful kids (Reese, 5.5 years old, and Chase, 4 years old).
I founded SunnySide back in 2011. It is a very personal boutique firm that consults, develops, and executes online marketing, web development, and social media strategies for locally and nationally-based businesses. We offer reputation/reviews management, blog management, digital advertising, newsletter/email marketing, organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, and overall social media strategy and execution. Businesses also seek us out for copywriting services, web development, brand positioning, press releases, usability testing, and eCommerce marketing.
We pride ourselves in working seamlessly with our clients’ teams to become a valuable asset for their brand. We offer custom-tailored online marketing services that are built around the goals of our clients’ businesses, and we are very flexible with dynamic budgets, evolving strategies, and shift course when necessary. We’re also a kind and approachable group of people – we become friends with many of our clients, because we genuinely care about their wellbeing (and success!).
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
SunnySide is built of a strong team of really intelligent people, and we care about the businesses we serve. We are a people-first/profits-next company, and I think you’d glean that from talking to any of our clients. Our number one goal is to offer services that companies need – it’s not just about our bottom line. We work with a lot of small businesses whose budgets are sacred, so we are as conservative as possible when we’re proposing ways to move the needle for them. In a nutshell, we’re transparent and authentic with our clients. Up-selling to pad our revenue isn’t in our wheelhouse. People see that and they appreciate it.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
At first it was word of mouth – our reputation got around quickly. Over the last few years our number one source of business has been through Google. We are in the top search results for “Denver social media marketing” and that’s because we have (at the time of this interview) 75 5-star reviews and a well-maintained website. That combination is gold when it comes to Google. Fortunately, we’ve never had to run a single ad; all our marketing is organic.
