We were lucky to catch up with Sandy Fernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sandy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
It seems as though the answer would be an obvious “of course I wished I started a business sooner-who wouldn’t?” Yet, the truth is life is about timing and I wasn’t ready any sooner.
I had a successful and tenured 22 year career in Banking and Finance, at the height of my career I was managing a 90mm portfolio with a team of 5 and I was making a nice six figure salary. Then in 2016 I was recruited to a competitor bank to open their new office location and lead it from the ground up, literally. However, within the first week I was in this new role, new job, new location-I WAS MISERABLE. I knew immediately I had made a huge mistake. This is when I decided to plan my exit strategy and I knew this was the moment I had been waiting for.
Many times throughout my career I wanted to start my own business, In fact I have a notebook filled with ideas on e-commerce, retail shops, business ventures and all sorts of fun stuff. However, things never lined up. The timing was off. There was always something keeping me safe and steady in corporate America. You see, back then my children were still in Elementary school, I needed to keep my health insurance benefits, raising two boys somehow led to skateboard scrapes or stitches and multiple cases of the cooties. Additionally, I didn’t have much in savings as I was learning to be a single mom and adjust to one paycheck.
It took me about ten years to be ready to start my own business. It was when I was financially sound with a savings account, no debt and 401k plan. My oldest son had graduated high-school, and my youngest was in his senior year. The only thing stopping me now, was fear.
One afternoon as I sat in my office miserable in that new job, I began to plan my exit strategy. That’s when divine inspiration came in. Karmic Currency, The energy behind business and finance was born.I created the concept of Chakra and Money. Finding a beautiful way to integrate Spirituality with Money. Helping people understand their money mindset and how to align your chakra energy in order to get out of their own way so they can create wealth.
Over the course of the next few months I designed my logo, built the website, wrote the blog posts, ordered business cards and t-shirts, I was ready! The only thing left to do was QUIT my job! I gave myself a goal of 12 months. I planned that I would continue to get paid while I worked on my business on nights and weekends. But, the universe had other plans for me.
6 months into that new job, they Fired me. As I drove home in tears, because who wants to get fired, right? I felt at peace. I took comfort at the thought that I was in a good place, my business was set up, and all I needed to do now was begin marketing it. I realized that NOW was the perfect time for me to start a business and not a moment before. Life is about timing and you should never judge yourself against some else’s path or the timing of their journey. This is your life, and your divine timing will happen, you just need to be ready!
I’m proud to say that in 2017 I finally took the step into entrepreneurship because that was the time the universe ordained it to happen and Karmic Currency is now 5 years old.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am often referred to as the “Money Angel”, I am a #1 Best Selling Author, Financial Consultant, Clairvoyant, and energetic light-worker.
As the President and Founder of Karmic Currency “the energy behind business and finance”
I offer a holistic approach to money. We believe that money is more than a currency, it is a current that runs through our lives. I help my clients understand their money mindset in order to practically achieve their financial goals. Whether is be setting a budget, planning for home ownership, getting out of debt, establishing or repairing personal or business credit. We give out clients and students a Holistic approach to money, by uncovering Chakra Blocks and developing strategic plans to align their desired Financial and Business goals into realistic and attainable metrics. We take the anxiety out of Money by using spiritual practices such as yoga, reiki, Theta healing, astrology and human design.
For over 20 years I worked in the Financial Services Industry. With hard work and a talent for intuitive finance, I not only brought success to myself but also to those that sought my services and advice.
As a former Vice President for a Financial Institution, my team and I held $90mm under my portfolio management. With exceptional leadership, communication and strong sales talents I proved was a force to be reckoned with. In fact, I was often reprimanded for being a “maverick” for frequently challenging the corporate status quo.
In 2017 I was let go from my high profile position and I turned “You’re fired” into “Fired up” by leveraging my professional skills and finally taking my own financial advice! I was able to tap into the entrepreneurial spirit and my inborn courage to take on challenges with the same finesse that had come to define my life and her career.
I now offer group coaching programs quarterly and monthly one-on-one coaching. I help my clients align their chakra energy, remove limiting beliefs and organize their finances in order to lay the groundwork for future success and to attract abundance and wealth.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the hardest things I needed to unlearn was exchanging time for money. As a former corporate employee I was always paid for my time, If I finished my work early I couldn’t just leave. I had to find a new project to work on or find things to do in order to fill my day until it was time to go home at 5pm, which was my schedule. When I started my business I unfortunately had this mindset ingrained and it caused me to create a lot of unnecessary work for myself aka “busy work”. Instead of outsourcing projects and tasks, I did them myself. Learning the in and outs of email campaigns, content creation, website building, and social media analytics.
I am grateful that I learned how to do those things, as I can now better understand and oversee what I want done but, those were tedious tasks that truly took me all day to complete. And yet, It gave me a false sense of accomplishment. I felt that I had tackled a big job, however, I had done nothing that truly generated revenue or money.
It was an expensive lesson to learn. I now outsource where I can, and I am able to focus on my talents and passion which is the best way for me to make money. I also now charge based on my experience and expertise, not the time it takes me to complete what you need. I now get paid for my knowledge, not what I can do.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Consistency and Integrity! I believe that these two things are lacking in many start-ups and small businesses.
Integrity is often compromised with entrepreneurs. Making the mistake of taking on too much in order to get paid and make money. Don’t say yes to projects that are outside your scope of expertise and knowledge. Don’t say yes to clients that you know don’t vibe with you. People will respect you more for saying no. In fact they are likely to return to you. Setting boundaries from the beginning is the best way to establish a good reputation.
Consistency is also critical when starting a business. It is a fact that your audience must see you at least seven times before they purchase anything from you. It takes time to build trust and reputation. If you aren’t showing up everyday, for example: posting to your social media, sending emails, attending events and engaging with others, you will not succeed as a small business.
When I built my brand, people did not understand the concept of my business and how I was teaching about chakras and money. Yet, I pushed on. I continued to post despite low engagement at first. I continue to talk about my business with anyone and everyone who would listen. I stayed consistent. On numerous occasions I had clients sign up to work with me and the confessed “Sandy, i’ve been following you for over a year”
I’ll admit I had days I wasn’t in the mood, and I often felt like giving up, but I knew I had to show up for myself and for my company. I believed in my services and I knew that what I was teaching was going to revolutionize the way we see money and it would reshape the relationship we have with it.
So don’t give up on your dream! Stay CONSISTENT!! I promise it will pay off.
