We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sandy Clark Photographer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sandy Clark, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge to profitability in my industry as a photographer is the usage of mobile phones — selfies in particular — for business headshots, portraits, and model portfolios.

Sandy Clark, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a leader in the world of stock photography for over four decades and am represented by photo agencies around the world. I’ve worked in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. before relocating to Dallas-Fort Worth. I have photographed top fashion and beauty models from Elite, Ford, and Wilhelmina modeling agencies, as well as several celebrities. My work has appeared worldwide in numerous publications, magazines, brochures, billboards, and advertisements.
Today, I focus my efforts on creating beautiful headshots for established, as well as, aspiring models and actors. My studio makes my clients feel right at home and my location work helps to take my client’s career to the next level. With my vast experience in bringing out the best in all those I photograph, I am confident that my creative services will provide the client with exactly what they are looking for in their photographs. I am easy to work with, open to creative suggestions, and can take charge and lead the new model or actor in a way that achieves the best possible photographs.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Satisfied clients that have shared their experiences working with me has been the most effective and positive way that has helped me to build my reputation as a photographer. All of my clients have been greatly pleased with the work I have done and have either come back for another photo shoot or have recommended my services to others.

When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I believe that non-creatives really have a hard time understanding that it is not only taking the picture — with a creative and technical eye — but also all the intense work that goes on behind-the-scenes in prepping the image for printing or social media. There is a lot of creativity that goes on once the camera is set down and the images are uploaded to the computer. I have a superior knack for making my clients look fantastic without heavy retouching. While it starts when taking the pictures and the lighting used to bring out my client’s best features, when the strobe lights are off, the other part of a great photographer’s job is to produce the perfect picture of my clients without using filters or making them look unnatural.
