We recently connected with Sandrine Rudaz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sandrine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I am currently writing the score for the documentary “Yogis of Ukraine,” the most meaningful project I’ve had the privilege of working on. Directed by Bob Degus, producer of “Austin Powers” and the Oscar-nominated “Pleasantville,” this documentary was filmed entirely in Ukraine during the war. The film tells the true story of how more than 250 Ukrainian Yogis are using yoga to empower themselves, heal their country, and inspire the world. It explores how these Yogis find joy, happiness, and gratitude amidst turmoil and destruction, offering a profound lesson on the resilience of the human spirit.
This project is a unique opportunity in my career to raise awareness through my music by telling impactful stories. I am immensely grateful to Bob for this opportunity to contribute to such a powerful and beautiful film. I am convinced that the lessons these Yogis have learned will change the world, and I am honored to play a role in amplifying their message.

Sandrine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a composer from Los Angeles. If I had to explain what I do, I would say that I paint with sounds. Every film is a white canvas, and it is my work to paint it with music which will enhance the project. It is about feeling the heartbeat of the story, then finding the rhythm and the melodies that carry forth with that beat. I work hand in hand with the director, going deep into his or her vision for the music to be the same language as film. It is an interaction of emotion and technique, ranging from a single piano note to a full orchestral crescendo. It tells what words cannot, essentially making the invisible visible, using music.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My first goal will always be serving first the story and the film with my music, believing that music has the power to augment narrative, underline the emotional character arcs, and plunge the audience into the world of the film. My mission is always to create themes and scores that resonate with audiences, enhancing their cinematic experience.
Collaboration has also been a cornerstone of my journey. Working in a close collaboration with the directors, understanding their vision, and in return assisting with carrying this vision into music is an extremely rewarding process. Each film is a completely new adventure, different challenges call for their musical language. What I want to try and find is that language somehow—to come up with a score that fits exactly with the vision of the director and the emotional heartbeat of that film.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The greatest pleasure to me, as an artist, is the ability to have people feel and understand what I express in music. Music is able to touch and connect on such a deep level with people, bring back memories and feelings of every kind, and connect personally with the listener. There’s something magical when you create a piece of music that becomes part of someone’s life and impacts his or her emotions and thoughts. This is the connection you will bring to an audience: knowing that your work may inspire, comfort, excite, or move others in powerful ways. Whenever someone tells me how a piece of my music has affected them, it reminds me of why I do what I do, what an incredibly humble and fulfilling thing. To me, this would be the ultimate payoff of being a creative.
