We recently connected with Sandrine Hermand-Grisel and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sandrine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As a photographer myself, I truly understand how difficult it can be to get your work noticed. It’s a constant struggle to break through the noise and gain the recognition you deserve, especially when visibility can often feel out of reach. That’s why, in 2013, I co-founded All About Photo with my husband, Fabien. From the very beginning, our mission has been to support photographers worldwide by giving them a platform to showcase their work and helping them achieve the exposure they need.
Every single day, we have the privilege of discovering new, incredible talent. It’s such a rewarding experience to be able to contribute to their journey. For me, being part of a community that allows photographers to share their stories and to be seen and heard is what makes it all so meaningful. It’s not just about promoting beautiful images; it’s about creating real opportunities for artists to grow and gain the recognition they’ve worked so hard for. This feels like a personal mission to me, and I’m deeply grateful for the chance to be part of it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a self-taught French photographer who spent five years in the UK and sixteen in the U.S. I originally studied international law as a path toward photojournalism, but after losing my mother during that time, I realized how short and precious life really is. I decided to stop following a conventional path and instead chose photography as a way to live more intentionally. It gave me space to slow down, explore emotion, and express myself freely.
My work is deeply personal and emotionally driven. I’m drawn to themes like memory, childhood, time, and the quiet, in-between moments that often go unnoticed. I don’t limit myself to one genre—my creative process is intuitive rather than structured, which has led me to explore both poetic and documentary approaches.
What inspires me most are human stories—how we live, connect, and dream. I’ve always been shy and found it difficult to express my feelings with words, so photography became my way of communicating. My father gave me my first camera when I was seven, and I haven’t stopped using it since. It became my shield and my voice—something that lets me engage with the world as an observer rather than the center of attention. Art was always part of my upbringing, and in many ways, it feels like the most natural way for me to exist and express who I am.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Definitely. When I first started, I was focused almost entirely on the work — taking photos, refining my eye, trying to find my voice. I didn’t realize how essential it is to also think about how and where your work is seen. I wish I’d known earlier about things like open calls, grants, and photo competitions. Not just for the recognition, but for the structure and deadlines they give you — and the community they connect you to.
That’s actually a big part of why we created All About Photo. I wanted to build something I felt was missing when I was starting out — a space that champions photographers at all stages, not just the already-established names. A platform where good work, honest storytelling, and passion could be seen and appreciated. Looking back, I realize how much it would have helped to know that opportunities to share your work were out there — and that someone was looking for it.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, it’s the connection — that quiet moment when someone sees a photograph and feels something. It doesn’t have to be grand or dramatic, but just knowing that an image I’ve taken or a story I’ve helped bring into the world has moved someone, stayed with them, or made them pause — that’s incredibly fulfilling.
I also find a lot of joy in helping others gain that kind of visibility. Through All About Photo, I get to discover new talent every day, and there’s something really beautiful about shining a light on work that deserves to be seen. It’s not just about creating for myself anymore — it’s about building a space where others can grow, be recognized, and feel part of something bigger.
There’s a kind of quiet magic in that — in creating, curating, and connecting. That’s what keeps me going.
