Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sandra Watkins Lopes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sandra , appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
“I still remember the summer of 2019 like it was yesterday. I was a new mom, living in a new country, and my husband was deployed. I was working two part-time jobs and caring for our one-and-a-half-year-old son alone. But despite the chaos, I had a burning passion to create something of my own.
I started sketching fashion designs in my garage, inspired by Africa’s vibrant culture and stunning landscapes, specifically the island of Cabo Verde. My husband had given me a collection of beautiful fabrics, and I was determined to bring my ideas to life.
It wasn’t easy, of course. Sometimes, I felt like quitting when the stress and uncertainty seemed too much to bear. But my son was always by my side, and I knew I had to keep going for him.
I spent countless hours sewing prototypes, refining my designs, and cutting and sewing the original fabrics. And finally, after almost a year of hard work, my first collection was ready.
Finding models was a breeze thanks to my job at a model agency. And when we did our first photoshoot at White Sand in El Paso, Texas, it was a whirlwind experience. The makeup artist was late, and some models didn’t show up, but we made it work.
The fashion show that followed was a dream come true. Sponsored by the model agency, it was my debut collection, and the response was overwhelming. People loved my designs, and I felt I was on top of the world.
From there, things took off. I started planning and executing more photoshoots, scouting my own models, and creating more collections. I won the “Excellence in Design” award from Gone Events, published in four magazines (including a front cover feature!), and showcased my work at three more fashion shows.
Looking back, I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. And I know that no matter what challenges come my way, I can overcome them, as long as I have my passion and my son by my side.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey has been a testament to resilience. I’ve faced numerous challenges, but one story that stands out is when I moved to a new country with a toddler, worked two jobs, and still managed to create a 12-piece fashion collection from my garage. It wasn’t easy, but I persevered. I worked tirelessly, often with my toddler on my hip, to bring my vision to life. And when people asked how I did it, I simply said, ‘I had to.’
Today, I’m proud to say that I’m a full-time retail manager and a 24/7 mom, wife, and entrepreneur. My journey has taught me resilience is not about being fearless but facing your fears head-on. It’s about embracing the unknown and pushing forward, even when the odds are against you. And I’m living proof that anything is possible with determination and hard work. I still have a long way to go, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
