We recently connected with Sandra Harvey and have shared our conversation below.
Sandra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I wanted to name of my business something that indicated it was personal, could be used to sell a variety of baked goods or handmade items, was cute, and easy to remember. I brainstormed a list of names and then performed a Google search to see if anyone else had already used them. I also searched social media to see if there were other companies or individuals using the my potential list of names. This process helped lead me to the name Sprinkled with Sandra.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started baking gluten-free items out of necessity. I went gluten-free years ago when there weren’t many tasty options. At first, I just baked treats for me, my family, and my friends. Over time I got more and more requests which eventually led to my home baking business. My favorite thing to do is to create something that looks great and tastes gluten-full when it is actually gluten-free. What I am most proud of is that my home business still brings me joy. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and provides me a creative outlet while making others happy. It doesn’t get much better than that.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am authentic and take a great deal of care when baking and decorating my treats. I handle each order as though it is my only order. I am honest and fair with customers about my recommendations. On more than one occasion, I have told a customer that I would be happy to ship an order to them, but with the cost of shipping it would be more economical for them to use a local baker. To my surprise, they still chose to order from me and stayed the quality of my baked goods were worth the shipping cost.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As a small business, the most effective way I have been able build clientele is word of mouth. Don’t under-value the importance of friends and family members recommending your business to others. I also recommend being creative in how you provide free samples. I’ve donated decorated cookies to fundraising groups and they advertised my business in their social and print media. I also made sure that the items I donated were packaged with my contact or social media information, so that the people who received my cookies would know how to contact me for future orders.
